I recently purged some posts to help keep the forums zippy, and then re-built the post counts. It's as simple as that.

I had hoped my posts would be around for decades to come - to inspire future generations.

I'm not sure what a high post count reflects - possibly enthusiasm, maybe sadness or too much time on your hands?
In my case, in part, it's that I'm a smoker. There's no smoking in our house but my computer is in my 'posh shed' - aka home office, which is separate from the house.  So when I pop out to the shed for a nicotine fix I usually log on and add a few flippant comments.

Took me over 10 years to reach 1000 posts, had a little celebration all of my own when I passed that milestone...now I am but a lowly 400'er again...

What with this and the fact my member number has gone....how WILL people know how important I am???

Member number 159 .... I hadn't realised that you were that slow to sign up. :P

You'll be pleased to know that the latest version of the forums software now has an archiving feature, which looks like I'll no longer have to purge the forums periodically to help ensure they work speedily on busier days - so your post count shouldn't fall again in the future.

I've yet to install the latest version of the software tho, as I'm waiting for the add-ons that I use to be updated to work with the latest version - hopefully they'll all be available within the next month or so. That new release of the software has some nice new features within it, so want to get it in place as soon as I can.

Tis a shame, lost over 2,000 and did enjoy reading back old posts. But if it keeps the site nice and quick.. and ensures no crash on Glasto T-Day then it is worth it.

I'd have preferred to have been able to keep them all since these forums were first installed, but it became impossible while also keeping the forums fast.

As i mentioned above, the latest version of the software (which I'll be installing tomorrow) has an archiving function, which will allow older posts to be moved to different database tables while still being accessible to read (but not added to). So that should hopefully mean that they'll be no need to purge older posts from now on. :)
