From a queue time & cost point of view, eFestivals article explains that the wristbands are posted out prior to the event & they can be deactivated immediately if lost or stolen. Therefore they can be sent out in standard 2nd class post rather than by secure carrier. This will save several hundred thousand pounds in costs to the festival, which will balance the cost of equipment.
Queue wise all you'll have to do is pass through security searches, then have your band scanned by someone with a handheld device.
Having your wristband clamped on my only take 20s, but 20s x 150,000 people is a lot of time.
This system will help reduce queue times without increasing costs.

My only concern is that the wristband will be plastic rather than cotton. Just not as pretty.

In terms of monitoring crowd sizes, surely they're already experienced enough to use their eyes & fairly accurately estimate crowd sizes.

If this is used, it'll only be for access reasons using Registration details. Then if it's succesful, they may slowly introduce further applications over the coming years.

Personally, I just don't care about Big Brother society. People know where I am & know what I eat & drink. Big deal
Well said. I think done in the right way, the system could work at glasto. A quick sum shows it takes over 800 man hours to put on 150000 wristbands.
Theres bound to be some pain at entry, but I reckon this could alleviate the worst of it

But we pay the postage costs, how does this effect their costs of posting? It doesn't and the equipment will cost more....

Someone made a good comment about how the wrist band will look. A lot of people keep their band on for a long time after the festival. If it has a chip in it will it be a different material that wont be as nice to wear and maybe not as such a nice design.

Even if they stay the same will people still want to wear a band with a chip in it. I'm sure the thing would be disabled but would people want to take the chance?

I fucking hate plastic wristbands. I'd be hacked off if any festival replaced the cloth ones.

I think they're going to look like this:

turns out Michael Eavis already has a stack of them at the farm - making the costs so much cheaper, ticket prices could be the same as 2011 in 2013!

Surely there are far more important for and against arguments than how it looks?!

Oh I dunno, chipped wristbands and/or collars are so 1990's TBH   Gotta get with it maaaaannnnn :P Implants are defo the way forward:

... rather scarily, 100% relevant to the principles of what's being suggested - i.e. providing venue entry and automated payment facilities etc :O
