The National played both festivals last year. But if the Cure are cheap, they could play second or NME.
I'd think they deserve to headline Reading. Didn't they play in 1979 or something.

A number of bands play both festivals (Arcade Fire also headlined Latitude and played R&L in the same year), the clincher is whether they'd play anything other than a headline slot because they wouldn't get offered that at R&L.

I'm sorry but you can't say for sure if the Cure would or wouldn't get offered a headline slot at R/L. They're certainly bigger than more than a few of the headliners they've had in recent years & until they're confirmed for Latitude (or another UK fest), I wouldn't rule them out 100%.
Edit: Oh & there's no way they'd headline NME or sub.

Yeah of course I can't say for sure, nobody can (or can say for sure that they would), it's just my opinion.

Well if the choice was up to me!. I'd give them the headline slot.

As much as I want to see them headline R/L, I'd rather watch them with a truly appreciative crowd, so Hop Farm or Latitude would be better in my opinion. I just have a strange feeling Melvin may have been after them for R/L, but we'll see I guess.

I think if it was a uk exclusive they'd shift a lot of tickets.
It might not be the numbers that the Killers get, but thats not such a bad thing.
The Pixies, Faith No More, Janes Addiction (if they'd played), etc, etc...... and not forgetting the Descendents (who barely had 200 people!) all deserved to headline and ALL put on amazing shows.
Who cares about the people who go to reading for the pop-headliner. Put some Radio 1 friendly band for them in the tent.

The Cure would always headline but they won't play RnL. If they did, they would headline.

Its weird as The Cure, I believe, are a band that arent big enough to headline but wouldnt seem right anywhere else but in a headlining spot. I know people may take offense to such a comment but just remember that they are not really a band that would sell massive amounts of tickets to young music fans. I'm only 20 and love them, but I've soon too many classic bands at Reading having offensively small crowds.

Amazing live
Iconic songs
Exactly what a headline act should be.

Headlining should have a decent back catalogue, not headlining after couple of albums. The strokes and the darkness spring to mind.

lol at the peeps thinking The Cure don't have the 'demographic' at R&L to headline. Don't people remember the absolutely tiny crowd that Arcade Fire got? At Leeds you could literally walk down to the front & get 2 rows from the barrier...and that's a band that are getting NME hype, radio play etc.

Some of the people in this thread are clearly on crack.
The Cure are by far and away 'big enough' to headline. They are The Cure.
The Cure will not subheadline or headline NME because why would they? What reason is there for them to do that?
The Cure are timeless, and have a national treasure vibe to them. Everyone knows at least 5 songs.
The Cure still sell out arenas worldwide, and are headlining every festival they are playing this year.
They are the fucking Cure.
If they headline. I'm there.

I have to disagree i dont think they are a headliner that fits in with the R&L target audience. + bestival headliner does not = reading headliner. IMO of course...

This.
They sold out their Royal Albert Hall gig with Standing Tickets at £100 a piece I believe with no problem at all.
If R&L get Foo's, Kasabian and The Cure, they'll have secured the headliners of the summer for a festival. I'm not a big Kasabian fan but I can't deny their position and I'll watch half and watch half one someone else.
