eFestivals has launched a helpful tool for those Glastonbury Festival goers who are considering what other festivals to go to in its place next year.

Must admit it is a nifty bit of kit. Brought up my faves like BD and Sunrise. Seeing TitP at the top of the list has made of laugh though. A lot of folk are going to find it useful I think :-)

it depends what you choose. From the testing I've done I reckon they'll be far more people who'll see Bestival constantly than ones who'll see TitP, tho perhaps i'm wrong about that.

One of the tests I tried was firstly to have all the boxes ticked, and get the result. Then I'd go back, untick the top one that was ticked, and get those results. Etc - i repeated that until I'd done the remaining one. As far as I remember, only once  Bestival wasn't top of the list (and then I think it was second).

I think it's T and Bestival that will match at the top of the list for most people - T because it has many of the same bigger name acts, and Bestival because it has loads of minor name DJs and like in little tents much like Glasto, plus a decent number of the bigger names.

I think for most people they'd expect to see the bigger name festivals as suggestions because most people know something about them anyway, and they all share a number of the same bigger-name bands with Glastonbury. But...

The point of putting the thing together was a hope that people will look further down the list and consider festivals they might not have considered otherwise. I know from the testing I've done it's good for throwing in the odd curveball that you might not have thought of as a decent match when it actually is. :)

Would help if you could filter more by dates or a more precise location - though it did come up with two that I'll be going to anyway.

Did you think about adding different factors other than the stages? For example quality of food, policy/attitude towards children, separate or mixed camping and arena, etc.? If you select the more mainstream stages (Other, JP and BBC Intro) it throws up pretty much all the mainstream festivals and although it may not seem so they are all noticably different.

I was quite surprised to see R&L turn up when I selected the theatre/cabaret tent, although I guess it's because there's an alternative tent. I can just imagine some "I love the theatre and cabaret at Glasto but went to Reading and it was shit" comments :D

It's a great bit of kit though, I guess people need to relaise that the more they select then the more refined and accurate the results would be.

I considered doing things like this - but as the main point of it is to open people's eyes to festivals they might not have otherwise considered, it seemed a bit daft to then limit the results they get.

we don't have solid data on those sorts of things, so there's no way to do a data comparison.

yep - but the results it gives is based solely on the bands that have played the stages you select and have also played the festivals it gives you in the results.

So actually, those festivals aren't as different as you're believing.

they're suggestions based on a data comparison.

The results include links for more details on those result festivals, so that the user can look into things a little deeper.

The point is to open people's eyes to festivals they might not otherwise consider attending.

It gave me a top two of Bestval & Latitude.

Which is EXACTLY how I was thinking, but not conciously because of my music tastes.

Gave me Bestival, T In The Park and Reading....which is about right if you count i ticked other stage/john peel more than fact I ticked Bourbon Street and West Holts :) ( Theres a thought I am going do it without the big stages to select one festival to go to,seems a more logical way to go as I know what the big ones offer).

Great bit of kit! it didnt suggest Reading, Leeds, T or Bestival for me which is just as well as i dont want to go to any of those, it brought up some wonderful smaller fests which is exactly what i've been trying to research... gonna get my Beautiful Days ticket when i get paid, then consider some off the list here... thanks :)

Tried it by picking a stage I do work for...

...pretty much bang on for other stuff they're involved in. Nifty kit indeed.
