Just took a bimble around the site and good god.. what a mess... would love to have seen it this time last week!!.. anyway the main arena area is spotless but muddy and the tracks are now being removed... Met a few nice people and chatted casually.... my fave person today was "Jasper" the metal detector enthusiast.

Whilst I was there I got talking to the staff, and no less than 1000 tents were slashed and binned as they never had anyone available to help recycle them... So after a brief conversation with Collette the cleanup manager/co-ordinator we have started the ball rolling for a red cross style recycle point and sticker system for the abandoned tents for next year.. I have already sourced five volunteers and a large HGV to remove abandoned tents next year so they can be cleaned and given to charity's or services who provide aid for natural disasters etc.

To be honest I did see it from behind the fences mid week and it looked like something out of the film district 9 where all the prawns live lol

We left at about 2.30am on Sunday and, after the rain at around midnight, I couldn't believe how sloppy it had actually got pretty much everywhere on site!!  :o

DiscoDan good on you for organising a recycling process for next year's tents - surely you should get some sort of ticket discount for helping out??!!  Might be worth chancing your luck  ;)

To be honest I am not arsed about discounts or anything.. I just hate seeing all this waste, I know they have done this in the past at other festivals and the way Collette is going on I think I may be doing a few others next year. I have also been in touch with my bosses as they love all that charity and enviroment stuff, so I will be meeting with our Jag Liasons Team to see if we can borrow staff for this... It is all up in the air at the moment but I think a year to sort it all should be perfect.

Borrowed from the big tent recycle 2010

If a festival attendee buys a new camping set up of 1 tent, 1 sleeping bag, 1 roll mat, 1 air bed and 1 camping chair it will produce 168kg CO2e.

If you then discard it at a festival and it is sent to landfill that then produces a further 2kg CO2e direct from landfilling, and 168kg CO2e that has then also been wasted to landfill.

If you then have to buy a new camping set up it will produce another 168kg CO2e.

It might not seem a lot for one person but multiply it by the hundreds, maybe even thousands of people who attend festivals every year and leave re-usable or recyclable items for landfill, it soon adds up to something that everyone has their own part to play in.

All CO2e figures have been calculated using the DEFRA Emissions Calculator.

I always thought contamination of the tents would be a problem? Such as bugs, dirt, drugs, etc residue left over in the tents? Really good idea I agree, but would take a lot of volunteers considering each tent has to be taken down and rolled up with everything in tact, then be decontaminated and rolled up again.

Not a problem mate when you work in a factory with facilities to accomodate things such as cleaning/disinfecting drying, plus the company I work for would supply a very lot of manpower as it looks good on their resume' of charitable work...

One can accomplish a lot on one's weeks holiday.. I have not been off the phone today sorting stuff out ;)

Well in that case! :D Really good idea, and I hope it works out for you :)

Could pitch the biggest tent you find in middle of Liverpool city and feed the homeless bums some left over booze for warmth? haha
