Janelle Monae was repeated ad nauseam by the BBC so I guess they're pushing her as the breakout star.

They should stick to pushing cheap heroin to school children. The filthy bastards.

So gutted I missed the Joy Formidable cuz my shifts were on then. But I've seen them before and I really hope they are big soon. Love the album so much.

Another vote for joy formidable from me.

Does anyone know if any of their performance was recorded? Can't find it on the bbc website.

Just one clip atm.

Surprised by Joy Formidable love. They just don't seem to sell records. Played Other Stage last year as well remember. Can't see them starting now.

Janelle's also played London about 5 times in the last year. Hyped album on release/end of year list topper for Guardian. And three singles already (the best tracks), unless she re-releases one of them.

Ed Sheeran will be the one to go on. Noah and the Whale will go on further as well. Jessie Joke's had it.

The record is good, but the live experience is incredible. I think it would be diminished by a larger stage though (or rather, by being further away. A larger crowd is fine if you're near the front of it!)

The aforementioned mate who'd love them -- I'm actively suggesting he doesn't listen to the record. See them live, or -- a distant second -- watch live footage.

I'm actually pretty keen on acts that aren't really about recordings.

it is.

caught them last year, then on tour early this year.
it's a shame that technical issues seem to dog them, though

Well then they'll just to continue to be a cult live act, surely?

Isn't the thread about being a breakout star - ala The Killers 2004. Glasvegas 2008. Mumfords 2010? Do JF have a song to go mainstream?

Janelle Monae was one of my highlights - came on my Dad's recommendation, but rather enjoyed it, being by the Brothers Bar probably helped though. Ed Sheeran was another one, having a no3 single boosted his popularity just before Glastonbury and I thought I check him out and he put on a good show! I thought he was just going to be another pretty boy with a guitar, but didn't realise he rapped too. The BBC recorded his whole set at BBC Introducing, which is definitely worth seeing.

Ah well, I misunderstood the question.

I don't think TJF will ever appeal to daytime Radio 2 listeners.

Liked 'em, but the stage show is so understated and shoegazy, I'm not sure it was a revelation.

And now we understand the question -- Yuck are *never* going to be a Mumford And Sons type breakthrough.

Yuck were ok. I saw them at their own gig a couple months ago and again, were ok. Better than ok, quite good. But their lack of any passion just ruins it for me. It just comes across as if they're just doing it as a job.
On record very good though. May as well just listen to them on record in a room full of people instead of going to one of their gigs in fact.

I agree. But I think it's part of "what they do". Standing still with a guitar, making good noises come out of it. See also My Bloody Valentine, or Spiritualized.

I especially wish the drummer would loosen up a bit. Great afro though.

The Gaslight Anthem were outstanding and Two Door Cinema Club will have won a lot of new fans but Laura Marling was absolutely magical. She is a very special young lady!

I also really enjoyed emerging talent winners, Treetop Flyers. I think we'll hear a lot more of them.
