Being a year clean of illegal substances or so called legal highs, this will be my first Glastonbury with nothing more than beer and cider.

Has anyone else been on this path? If so, what's your experience.

PS I  was not a heavy user just recreational - but rarely partied without
I am also not judging those that do - I believe it is about personal freedom and choice but that includes the choice not to at all or to tgive it up.
I am actually having a better time without and have also had less panic attacks, although I've no way of knowing if there is any connection.

Weird sense of deja vu, it's like I've just replied to this exact thread elsewhere.

It's been some years since I dabbled with anything other than booze and caffeine (which I still use with regularity).

I only used to use occasionally - mostly a bit of speed to keep awake/full of energy.  Then I started having really bad memory gaps.  Then I had a really bad come down inc. depression, suicidal thoughts, inability to sleep.  That was it for me.

TBH I don't feel like I'm missing out, but all nighters take some real commitment without the assistance!

I don't even get massively drunk.  I am in my comfort zone at home and prefer not to get too out of it (bad things happened when I once played with the herbal high stalls), I think that massive, crowded fields full of strangers can be one of the worst places to get really blasted (with the exception of mdma, which is ideally suited).

I'd have no problem going entirely sober, myself, but I enjoy a doobie, a beer and hell...on occasion even a cider.  I have played with more than this outside of festivals but frankly having to hang on to reality with my fingernails is something I'd rather do knowing that I had a safe room to hide in if it all went tits up.

This is what I posted elsewhere.  I'd add that I've considered mdma at glastonbury as a suitable choice, took some with me last year and it came home untouched as there just wasn't a time that I felt that was how my evening needed to go.

I'll always been a beer and cider man. Think I'll just keep it going on natural euphoria. Other than that, just pace myself I guess

Last year was the first time that I didn't touch anything remotely illegal - and I had the best time yet (though the great weather might have helped).

Despite my username in 2007, my first year, I did it all just on cider and woo-woos I never even considered taking anything else and I had an absolute riot, in a good way you understand.  However there are gaps in my memory from that year, I am on video playing some drinking cider game that I have zero recollection of, but it is most likely the booze that does that, obviously booze and extras make it worse, but never a memory lapse just on illegals.

The massive difference which has already been mentioned is it takes a whole lot of effort to pull an all nighter on the cider.  Which if we are being honest is why the naughty corner quietens down at about 02.00 or earlier as all the cider boys go to bed.

That said the best in my experience is a combination of the two, I am not saying take everything at the same time, but just both in moderation.  I believe you can tease I little more out of the experience, with the right chemical assistance and know-how in such of course.

As I have said on another thread Glastonbury is not a good place for your first time on such things.

i can never understand anybody feeling the need to take drugs in a social environment.  Surely this says more about the people that you are with?

Without wanting to sound judgemental, anybody that thinks its great or cool to use drugs just to enjoy themselves, try getting new mates.

Do you drink Vern?  Or go to gigs with mates?  Doing things with people doesn't mean that you are supplementing something that is missing.

Walks off muttering "what is it with people today?"

Drugs can enhance a good time you are having with your mates (Well they do for me anyway  ;) )

It makes me sad to think how much of my younger Glastonburies I allowed myself to waste. Even though it is harder to stay out so late nowadays, I still do and see so much more than I ever did before, and I enjoy it more because I'm not concerned with falling down, I interact more because I can trust myself to speak, and I remember more of it too.

When I was young I thought it was a brilliant place to take drugs & get totally hammered, but now I realise it's somewhere so amazing that you really don't need any assistance to have the time of your life.

each to their own, i have just never found the need to do it, I have a good enough time when out with my mates over the past 30 or so years, without the need of a fake chemical enhancer.

I never really got the whole ecstasy thing myself, however having spent evenings with friends who were having the time of their lives and discovered just how chummy strangers on it became I have dabbled, later in life than most and can confirm that there are some, currently illegal substances that will enhance a night out.

Júst think, if they legalised e you'd be able to buy REALLY good spiced rum :)

I have a decent sized social group, many of whom are workmates or ex-workmates, we are clearly not off our faces at work and enjoy the freedom to open up a bit in the pub or alot more in my kitchen with a few cans and a joint.  On a big night out we might have a benny hill or 2.  The common factor to our fun is US, the drugs, alcohol, movie or band that add to that are just some extra stimulus to our friendship on that evening.  We aren't all in a rancid toilet with a hose around our arm.

I've done festivals both Drug free and excessively(mdma, coke, speed and weed), as well as others with a bit of a dabble here and there. Probably couldn't pick the best out of all of them.
This year I won't be taking anything with me but If i get any opportunities i'll probably sample a bit.

I probably wouldn't enjoy a festival without drinking though, I would be fine not getting hammered but I enjoy a beer or even cider too much to do it completely sober.

first time for me im planning on just booze....will feel a completely different world but im looking forward to losing some of the 'baggage' that goes with it all..

As mentioned a bit above, not sure how to 'keep going' after a certain time; also with booze i sometimes hit that spot where I can't get any more drunk so just kind of burn out

having said that there's been many a time where I've been ploughing through various substances just for the sake of keeping going..and not wanting to 'dip'..
