So if you want things to change you either need to:-
1. convince others of the rightness of your views. You're failing so far. Or
2. get a gun and take over the country by force.

Oh I think I know the answer to this. Is it Number 2?

HI! i'm right and you're wrong!

Er, really? Why?

Because I am....anyone one seen my massive spade, need to dig myself in a bit deeper. Oh look, in the meantime, there's a brick wall you can all bang your heads against continuously

This^

Has anyone's position moved in the last 20 pages?

I don't even think the 2 sides are arguing about the same subject!

I think Neil is saying this is the law with no hint whether he feels it's right or wrong.

I think Autoinflate is saying the law is a ass and would like Neil's actual opinion on this but isn't getting it. (He doesn't have to give it). Also - "No-one has given an argument that convinces me I'm not right" - Well a fair few valid arguments as to why he might not be right have been given, and he doesn't accept any of them (which is his right).

So can't we agree that we're stuck and move on? This isn't a debate because it's not evolving.

For autowhatsit it would have to be.

He likes to storm off in huff trying to claim the moral high ground by saying I'm shit at formal debating, while completely ignoring the fact that the winner of any formal debate is the one who can convince a majority of the audience of their point of view.

The debate has been had here, and on a simple count he's lost.

If he can't win the debate with a Glasto audience then you can be sure as hell that he couldn't win it in wider society. And in fact wider society has that debate for real and his argument lost that too. The proof is in the existence of the licencing law as it is.

My actual personal point of view is that it's in around the right area.

It might be the case that if I considered all of the issues in-depth I might decide that there's scope for perhaps another 5dBs of volume, but I'd be hugely surprised if that would satisfy autowhatsit either - he clearly wants it all his way.

My selfish point of view is f**k the lot of them and turn it up, I wanna dance .... but I know from experience that I don't much like it done to me. So it's a case of getting a balance, a reasonable middle ground.

As for autowhatsits, perhaps all he really needs is a hearing test. After all, we don't all have equal hearing.

I live in central London it's where I have to live to do the job I do and maintain a family life. Where I live is still reasonably quiet I don't see your point some people do live in areas where they have little choice(the villages surrounding heathrow gatwick ) but even in the centre of cities most are still able to get a nights sleep without too much disturbance from noise
once a week, at 6.30am, the recycling people make the most unbearable racket chucking the bottles, sorting out the cans, etc etc for about 15 minutes... that's followed by the regular bin men, which is followed by the compost collection...

a few years ago, the flats opposite us had all night 'security' lights fitted to their entrances, which shine right into our bedroom. I asked the council if there was a limit to how bright the lights could be, and they checked them out and said they're within the limits

not sure where I'm going with this.....    the festival obviously has to abide by the rules/laws for its licence

There's plenty of examples where the hassle of a city is greater than the hassle of the countryside, but this isn't one of them. I'd be hugely surprised if dustmen in the countryside work any differently.

This thread should've ended when Neil pointed out the rules are here for a reason and there's nothing the ffest can do about it. The council give the rules and  the festival follows them or it gets shut down.

I had the same conversation with someone about fires at Reading Festival, they seemed to think the festival was banning fires on the Sunday just to be dicks whereas no amount of pointing out would show him it's rules brought in by the council that the festival has to follow.

It is sad that this is the way the country works now as things like festivals can't be as free as they have been but that's just the way it is and IMO we still have a huge amount of freedom at Glastonbury, much more than any other fest in the UK.

I've spent a couple of hours reading this thread in it's entirety.

It seems to me that the whole debate is based on the supposition that the sound levels are way too low.

For me, this is not the case (aside from certain performance in '07).

We all have a great time at glasto and indeed, we should feel privileged to attend given the huge number of folk who would give heir eye teeth to be ticket holders.

For the festival to continue we all need to accept that we have to live and let live not to paraphrase macca, live (enjoy banging tunes all night) and let (the festival) die.

As has already been said this nearly happened before.

Glasto is too great to risk for a few more 'banging tunes' in the middle of the night.

Perhaps autoinflate needs some hearing aids to hear things at his preferred volume level or at least a test to check out if he has a problem.

As for the original question re the queuing system killing the free glasto, an emphatic NO from me.

I'm willing to give the organisers a chance that they have got it right with albeit an incredibly long looking queue system. After all they've collectively been putting on the best party in the world for more than 40 years and it has evolved to comply with new legislation so it can continue, for better or worse.

That said I will not be queuing and will be bimbling around the site until things die down prior to venturing to Shangri la. Sunday night I will be there from about 8 pm though. See you there!
