My first Glasto gave me a form of ADD.  I'd prepared my clashfinder and picked out some must see's, then got there and spent 5 days wandering round completely agog at everything I saw.  I missed stacks of acts I wanted to see due to random distractions, Cabaret Tent, Bandstand, Dirty Boots, Avalon Cafe, BBC Introducing etc., you just walk past these places and think "that sounds good/fun/both - lets get a drink and check it out", next thing, the act you were going to see has finished.  I don't regret a single second of it though.

The Circus Tent is great for this.  I lost 10 minutes of wide mouthed awe at a couple outside the entrance who did a sort of acrobatic juggling act with really dangerous stuff (machete's etc.) culminating in him balancing on some kind of see-saw, her standing on his shoulders and them doing a double-decker juggling thing with all kinds of oddly shaped objects.  Incredible it was.  Britain really has got talent, just not on that lame-ass piece of scrotum excuse for a TV show.

i spent two hours looking at a big screen (by the meeting point I think) that showed live pics of the people bimbling about and had a finger on it (much like a cursor) that either pointed at or tickled the head of passers by. I was transfixed for an hour or two, that would have been a quarter of Springsteens set in 2009 ;-)

I tend to go to see the artists that I know will be special, or i know i probably on't see again.

Hence this year i'm 100% going to see B.B. King, U2, Paul Simon etc. Just because I know they are legendary or that i'm never going to see them again for one reason or another.

I will always see as many acts as I can, but will always choose artists i'll not get the chance to see again, over artists who tour all the time.

Case in point. U2. U2 are an overrated band who've not been good for a good 20 years. Primal Scream and DJ Shadow are clashing. I'd love to see both of those acts. I had my heart set on seeing Primal Scream. But I grew up on U2 and think it'd be nice to see them, and I will never pay their silly prices to go and see them on their own tour. Primal Scream are legends, but they also tour a lot, and their new releases don't tend to suck. I know i'll see Primal Scream again, U2 I won't.

Glastonbury is about experience and discovery for me. I will always go for the acts that will be the most special, or will introduce me to something new. Going for whatever bands you like at the time is fine for  other festivals, but with Glastonbury I go for the "moments".

On my bimbles between Things I Want To See, I try to plan a route past any "Legends" that may be playing.
Usually it takes a while to circumvent, or plough through the crowd, so there's plenty of time to get a feel of whether I want to stay or not.

I do this so I can at least say I've seen them, and it might be my last ever chance, seeing as I wouldn't be 100% sure of going to see them in the Real World.

how does being spoilt for choice equate to the festival being a place not to see amazing bands?

I think your attitude changes depending on how many times you've been. First time I went, I spent the entire Friday down the front of the Pyramid Stage, and saw what was a pretty cool line up iirc (Terrorvision, Beck, Levellers, Smashing Pumpkins, Prodigy, etc).

Second time, I still saw a few bands, but decided to go and check out the green field a bit more, which I'd only touched on the year before, and can't remember seeing many bands really.

Last year, something like my 14th Glasto, I think I saw three bands maybe? This year there's about the same number I feel i just can't miss (BB King definitely being one, cos yeah, when else will I get to see him?).
