"U2 promise 'Glastonbury on steroids' festival set this summer

Bono and co will have a 'big production' for festival

Bassist Adam Clayton told Q that the band’s headline performance on the Pyramid Stage on the Friday (June 24) of the Somerset bash will have grand production values.

Clayton said: "It’s very un-Glastonbury to have a big production but we will be sneaking a few things in through the back gate which will hopefully make this experience a little more like Glastonbury on steroids."

He added: "We’re stretching the level of what can be done. We hope to create a mind blowing experience that reacts well with all the other substances involved."

I think I may know what one of the sneaky surprises will be...

An absolutely huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge pair of yellow tint sunglasses for bono that would stretch halfway across the stage.  Awesome!

(sorry U2 fans, I couldnt resist)
(and yes, I know he wears them for his eye problem and he is not an egoistic self praising preacher)

the failure/success of their gig will solely depend on their setlist. focus on the early stuff, definitely avoid all the recent crap, build in an accoustic singalong segment like on the pop tour and the set will be a blinder...

fully agree there!

I think that they've got something up their sleeves for a 'show', hence them being on a friday to build it. There's not a chance U2 are just going to have a bog standard video wall for a stage.

Bruce wasn't allowed a walkway.

I've seen metallica act like they are bringing a space shuttle to a festival just to be presented with a low res video wall that was out of synch with the sound for the majority of the crowd, so I'll wait and see (well, I won't, I'm going to see ADF)

He and Blur however, were both allowed steps running down from the stage to the press-pit. Can see Bono making use of this.

I actually wouldnt be surprised to see a walkway..

Springsteen and Blur were saturday & sunday respectively... I reckon a walkway could be dismantled after U2 in time for the saturday opener... its only a bit of scaffold ;)

I've been really looking forward to seeing U2 on the Pyramid stage since they were announced for last year, as well as getting steadily p*ssed off with all the haters... but this just sounds arrogant. (cue the long line of U2 haters wondering why I'm surprised at that!)  :P

Surely the whole point of performing on the Pyramid stage is that it is just that? The Pyramid stage, not something else.

For me at least, it should be about a band and their music, not some huge production?

I completely agree. They got the tunes to carry them through, why bother with all this other crap??

there may not be any other crap, purely speculation... doesn't bother me either way.
Id be just as happy watching if there's just a plain black backdrop.

Tbf it's speculation from one of the band members so from a fairly good source.

I agree with being happy with a plain black backdrop btw. I think they have the performance in them to blow the crowd away without any add-ons.

But they were paid a rumoured £3.2million for that show as quoted on the download radio station, do Glastonbury pay out that sort of cash for headliners?
One of the biggest parts of AC/DC's stage show is the cannons facing out to the crowd, U2 could borrow them face them inwards and aim at Bono's big fat egotistical head.

They will defiantly set up something special. There will be the best money can buy lighting rig set up and LED screens behind them I reckon. No fireworks though, I would put money on that, it's not their thing or Willie Williams their show designer who has been with them since the 80's. As has most of the key crew.  Joe O'Herlihy has been their sound guy from the very start. I think for anyone that hasn't seen them live before, they will be impressed. U2 are a live band. All most all of their songs sound better live. When the intro to Where the streets have no name starts, and then the blast of those lights into the crowd that make it feel like the sun is out, that whole field is going to feel something! Guaranteed.   :D

I've seen U2 play live twice and both times they were just like ants because i was so far away. Both times at Wembley, once during the Zoorapa tour where i was at the complete other end of the stadium and a couple of years ago on the 360 tour where i was really up in the gods a couple of rows from the top. Both time the set escape me, i felt out of it and didn't really enjoy it as an experience. Yes the songs are the songs and are enough for me. Just give me a good hits set without anything fancy, except a few lights etc and i will be more than happy. I won't be happy if they stat playing crap like the Zoo album etc, but i have a feeling they will stay true to the spirit of Glastonbury and play a hits set that will be legendary. ...... heres hoping anyway!
