Bringing a tent on a plane

Does anyone know if you would be allowed to take a tent on the plane as hand luggage as long as you took the poles and pegs out and put them in the hold luggage?

Just wondering as our tent is quite big and heavy and it would add a lot of weight and take up space in our rucksack if we had to put it in the hold luggage..

any info greatly appreciated

cheers :D

It will all depend on which airline you are flying with as some of the budget types are really starting to crack down on the size of item youare allowed to carry on board as hand luggage. Best advice is to check with your airline as it will be a bit of a bummer to get stung for additional costs at the airport before you get to the festival.

You might be better off buying a tent when you get there, from one of the camping equipment suppliers, or see if you can arrange to pick one up from someone at the festival. Taking one on a plane will really restrict the amount of luggage you will be able to take with you and could result in steep excess baggage charges makeing it uneconomical. You used be able to buy before you got there through Joe Bananas, and then pick it up on site, but Joe Bananas seem now to have gone out of business, I am not sure if of the other camping equipment suppliers will offer the same service, however millets did last year (see this page from the official Glastonbury website). http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/news/buy-millets-gear-collect-at-glastonbury

tent has already been bought so wont be buying another one....its not as big as one of them wee wheely suitcases that people bring on a plane so i don't think size will be a problem, i was just wondering if they wud let ya bring the actual tent....seems like there shudn't be a problem so sounds good

Thanks for the info ppl

We've just been wondering about this. On easyjet it says you need to pay £18 to take a 20kg bag so if you can take a tent as hand luggage that would help but what about sleeping bags? Surely a sleeping bag is too big to take in your clothes bag and you couldn't take a sleeping bag and a tent as hand luggage?
