Wooderson, on 03 March 2011 - 06:13 PM, said:Nah mate. They won't take any risks. Much as I'd love them to, they will put oodles of effort into the performance, but they will stick to their tried and tested 40 or 50 songs theyre playing at the moment. Logically it makes no sense for them to mistep on such a grand stage.
Springsteen is a v good example of an artist with the chance to take huge risks on the night at Glasto. Yet it turned out to be the most conservative of the 7/8 shows of his ive seen.
Blur played their reunion tour set - what made it stand out from the other shows on that jaunt was the time/place/crowd etc.
I guarantee you that U2 will surprise people with stuff people are underestimating.
cheers mate for a sensible, non twatty response. Totally get the point, they're still very much a fully functioning rock band on tour so understand it will probably be business as usual. I'm sure they'll have a couple of aces up their sleave though

Depends what you define as a hit I suppose, it was mainly Beatles stuff but I wouldn't call Here Today and In Spite Of All The Danger hits.
This argument is getting silly really. They're bound to play loads of old stuff and a few new ones, like hardcore fans say. But if you look at their setlists, there's always plenty of old ones in their setlists to keep non-hardcore fans happy.

seeing as U2 have been having hits for nearly 30 years of course they'll be playing a lot of hits. But will still have a few album tracks that some won't know.
If ANY headliners only played obscure album songs and b'sides at a festival and none of their hits only pretensious muso snobs would enjoy it.

To be fair, U2 hardly ever play "obscure" tracks...they stick to a well rehearsed panel of songs and there's rarely any surprises in there...if anything, last year we probably had a better chance of a few curveballs as they were on a touring break prior to the festival and had time to rehearse (I guess that's where HMTMKMKM came from in the current set?), this year they're mid-tour so the chances of anything they haven't already played this year turning up are slim. Wooders and Digi pretty much have it spot on.
For my part, their current setlist looks pretty good to me, if they'd put back Breathe and Unforgettabe Fire I'd be more than happy...seeing as Springsteen got the best part of 2 hours 40 or so, time shouldn't be an issue for them.

The 'article' in the mirror has amused me greatly!
'Songs including Where the streets have no name, Sunday Bloody Sunday and With or Without You are on the short list'
No shit sherlock?!? I'm pretty sure i've heard them at every single show i've seen! LOL

Ive seen hundreds and hundreds of gigs and none made me feel as glad to be alive as that one did.
The irony of this thread. Everyone talks about Macca in '04 repeatedly as one of the finest headliner turns in recent years. That track "Follow Me" was a world premiere for an album that came out well over twelve months after the Worthy Farm show.
Greatest Hits mearse.

Aye, can't wait...I'm pretty much obsessed with The King is Dead at the moment, only PJ Harvey is getting a look in!

Time won't be an issue, their own shows usually clock in at just under two hours. There were some curveballs in the 360 sets, I think in 2009 they gave a live debut to Your Blue Room from the Passengers: Original Soundtrack album. Something few can have ever expected.

U2 have already said that the 3 claw stages will all go to good use after the tour ends later this year.
I always thought the glasto apparance would tie in when the tours finsihed and one of the claw stages would be given to glasto and U2 would be the first band to play on it.
I supose they could still give a claw to eavis when the tours ended
Imagine this at glasto it would like be war of the worlds all over

As discussed repeatedly on the thread with more than 40 pages by more knowledgeable people than you or I, U2 will not deviate enormously from their current setlist. They are not a "heritage" band yet. So we will get "Vertigo" and "Boots" and "Moment of Surrender".
100% we will get vertigo
