Just wondering if anyone knows of anywhere on the web where I might some old festival site maps? Late 90s, early 00s.
Curious to see how things have changed since I started going, and I like to wallow in nostalgia.
All I've found by googling is the last few years.

This is how it looked the first year I went - by the way at that time you could park beside your tent as well.

Compared to now it was a joy, not having to lug your gear across fields. And it made the fest far more spontaneous, as people would arrive with all sorts which added to the overall feel of the place.

There are a few early ones in as part of Glasto Earth if you download it. I put them together after coming into possession of a few old site production maps, and finding a few more here and there. Ground to a halt with them sadly due to time, and it's a pretty laborious task to get it spot on to Glasto Earth's exacting standards
, but do mean to do some more for Glasto Earth sometime to make every festival that's been done plotted on there.
The map of the 1979 one above was a nightmare to plot, cos it was drawn by an artist not a cartographer, so some of the field boundaries didn't match up that well. The rest were pretty straight forward though, and it's really interesting to see which bits of the festival have changed and when.

is that a trick question because unless I am going balmy there was no Glastonbury in 1988.
It may have been a bit later ' but I cant prove it ' .
I joined the WBC in 1989 and I know I was issued a on site car pass - the WBC camp was over near the wall on the East side but the exit was via the original entry point and I do recall there was lots of cars floating about inside { far more than you would expect to see with onsite access } hence why I think that some camping areas did still allow cars.
Its only a impression and I cant say for certain if there was a total ban or not but it did put me off from asking for a onsite pass for 1990 we took the coach instead.
Funny enough at Reading last year I was speaking to the WBC Chairman to figure out when we switched crew camps but he thinks it may have been 92 or 93 { in fact many of the Senior Managers were surprised that there was another camp that they did not know about } - I know exactly where we moved to which was the field in front of the open air cinema and we were there for ages.It was dead easy to get our supply trucks into compared to the old camp.
Anyway I agree that at the time having a car beside the tent was a great saving but then they brought health and safety laws etc etc although I cant recall there was any fires caused by burning petrol tanks { well certainly not around when I was camping }
Its true that it would be impossible to bring this back

By the way I do have all the Programme's from all the years since 1979 but they are stacked in a shed but I have some repair work on the go just now so I am not going to do any digging about in my shed until that is all ended but if anyone wants a scan please let me know but wait until the winter when I may have my flat the way it was before I had two roof leaks from above Christmas 2009 { and no that is not a typing mistake - I live in a rented flat and the landlady who runs a ' event planning company ' has been pissing about and not getting the job finished }

Part of me actually thinks it was still there (in some form anyway) in 97 (the bad year) as I was nightshift and my job that year was to check all the bars on the nightshift to hand out batteries etc and I am sure the compound was up that way. If not, then it was 95 though.
Would be nice to know for sure though, going by old maps

.... I deliberately put 'about' because I wasn't sure if there'd been a fest in '88 or not without looking it up.
But I picked '88 and not '89 because as far as I can remember (and maybe I'm wrong), '89 was the year of the security/travellers 'battles', and I have a feeling that they'd stopped people driving onto site by the year of those 'battles'.
But it was all a long time ago now, and trying to distinguish one from another from back then is hard now, and getting harder.

I know there isnt a scale there but am I right in thinking that the long lane on the right is Muddy Lane and roughly where the marquee at the bottom is would be roughly where the Cider Bus is these days? Or is this wishful thinking?

Sadly since then I have had two strokes so part of my brain was wiped away hence why I was asking the WBC Chairman { who is Steve Pryle who you must know and has been the chairman right from the start }
I was just going on what he said as there is no way I can fix dates that way.
Certainly Specialized Security was working for the WBC had to be a good twenty { or so years }
Will have to look though some old photographs as I can tell by the layout which camp was which.
I do know that one year I did drive around ' with permission ' in between the wall from lets call it the old camp - { East side } and won a bet from Brian { who was a supervisor with Specialized Security } who said it would be impossible to do but we made it .
let me have another go with Steve as he must have access to all the old WBC records so we can nail the date on its head.
I can remember the old camp but even if you offered me £ 10,000 I could not say how many years I camped there for as it has all gone - I do know we moved to the newer camp { in front of the open air cinema } so there was not another camp in between but you could be right it may be 95/97 or later.
it will all come out in the wash - there is a fair number of the senior managers who has been doing it as long { if not longer than me } but the only time I see them is late at night and you would be lucky to find many who can remember their own name when they are ' relaxing '
Being Scottish I always got on with Specialized Security and I did fight for them when the new guard decided to replace them but they were convinced they knew better { although very few of that lot is still with the WBC }

Ahh yeah Brian (there was a couple McGhee and McManess) and you probably remember Gordon as well
Anyway this is off topic, but yeah would be nice to see some actual staff site plans from back then as well as the maps that are in this thread
Glasto - not as it used to be
Hope to catch you somewhere this year Brian

Sort of, that's why that particular map is lovely from an arty POV but annoying for recreating on google earth.
The long lane on the right of that map is most likely muddy lane (turning into Brimley lane at the top and forming a cross roads as marked with the Pylle Road as it shows). So that would place the Marquee at where the cider bus is now.
The annoying thing is that the fields to the right of that lane on the map are almost certainly the ones to the east of Cockmill lane, they're drawn the same shape as they are in real life pretty much, and they stayed that shape and that usage on some later maps too. What they seem to have done is missed out the fields between muddy lane and Cockmill Lane to make it all look closer together.
The fields they've missed out seem to be on an old medieval style layout, so little chance the field boundaries have changed at any point, and the hedges are too well established when you look at them anyway, so I guess there was just some artistic license going on.
Did my head in for a while that map, i can tell you...

Eamon Pryle was my first Tent Manager and we have been good friends ever since.
Chris Hart was not about for a few years but I did see him last year.
I happen to know I will be working in the village bar { WBC Campsite } as I still have side effects from my prostate cancer treatment hence why its safer that I work within the camp.
Give me a shout { will send you my number }

My first year was 1989 and parking was outside the fence then. I arrived on the Wednesday morning and ended up in West parking where a number of people seemed a little annoyed that they couldn't camp next to their cars, so maybe 89 was the first year they seperated the two. Because I arrived so early I did end up in a field where I could park and camp and security left us alone, but this was outside the wall. I missed the 1990 festival which was the one with the Traveller/Security skirmishes and when I returned in 1992 after the fallow year I recall that the no parking and camping rule was being stictly adhered to.
It was in the late 80s that they started to seperate the two at Reading as well, which I'd been going to since 1976, so the new Health & Safety restrictions must have come into force around then.
