anyone go?
Absolutely sensational stuff. I maintain that I dont think their latest album is anything like their best and the strings on some of the songs are utterly unnecessary and are even spoiling in some cases (to the brink for example) - but I blame guy garvey for this.
Anyway, this was marvellous stuff and they played a decent chunk of old stuff too. The highlight being Because. I recorded it and will upload it to youtube and throw a link up. Johnny also did a little solo slot in the middle, with an extended version of At the sea which was wonderful (shame langdale wolf no longer posts here as he;d had loved it).
Also, has anyone ever been to a gig at the union chapel? First time for me but if you ever get the chance, take it. Amazing venue. I would dearly love to see nick cave and the bad seeds there. It would be the most perfect thing I can imagine.
I reckon they are a shoe in at glastonbury, headlining the john peel might be nice.

I was flyering outside, but the rain pushed me away early. Was hoping for a free ticket but, guess not.
Cant really see them playing a large stage though - would like to see an Acoustic headline maybe, or perhaps John Peel.

Yes, been to a 'Levellers' gig at The Union Chapel (Feb 16th 2008 Mark, Simon, Jon; Freeborn John live). Teriffic venue - really stuck in my memory - met and spoke to Mark and Simon there just wandering around during the interval and after the show. Seems to be becoming increasingly popular as a venue - often seeing it listed in London tour dates for bands. Old Methodist church isn't it? Michael Eavis would approve . . .

aye thats the one. I'd have loved to have been at that levs-lite gig!
Only draw back is that you cant take beer into the main part and its all seater so I imagine a lively gig might be a bit restrictive. How did you get on with the levs, surely everyone didnt sit all throughout??

Off to go see them in Nottingham next Tuesday, and I've not been this excited about a gig since Glastonbury in June. Good to hear that they seem on be on good form.

honestly, you really wont be disappointed. It was a great setlist and a brilliant gig. Johnny was on top form between songs too, bragging about being interviewed by Zoe Ball now they are rock stars etc.
All this mercury prize business has been really good for them. Their album is miles better than that turgid effort by the xx.

Yeah, though the bars were quite lively and roomy if I remember. Was quite rowdy on occasion actually during the gig - there were like Royalist and Parliamentarian dressed fans heckling each other and shouting from the mezzanine at the Bishop on stage during his pieces. Things like, "aye, let 'im 'ang" and all that - people were really getting into the spirit of the period - was all good natured and created quite a theatrical atmos. Reminded me a bit of Lewis bonfire night (without the pyrotechnics!).

im going to see them at the cluny in newcastle tonight and cant wait, really small intimate venue that holds around 250 people. caught them at the queens head and having heard the album i cant wait to relive the live version. looking forward to catching a lot of the older stuff as well

the gig was excellent, unfortunatly spoiled by one thing, why go to a gig and talk all the way through it ? ignorant tw*ts, not just through one song, through the support, interval and main act. then they had the audacity to applaud between songs, they'd never even listened to. Even the band commented on it.
dont mind a small bit of chat, but when a lot of the set is slow and meaningfully quiet why chat on ? what makes matters worse, theres a bar just 10 metres away where they could chat to their hearts content.
Kloot played for over an hour and a half, the stage was so small that they seemed to leave out the supporting classical instruments that they used the last time i saw them at Glastonbury. 'Proof' went down really well with everyone, 'because' was spoiled by people behind me ! bah
seemingly "she turned the blue sky 'which club we gannin to after here like', on her back 'fk kna's but i need some bate from somewhere rund here before i gan anywhere', she comes again"
meaningful lyrics as john intended, im sure you'll agree !

Went to the Union Chapel to see Noel Gallagher a a few years ago, one of the gigs of my life. Had the mighty Shack as support and Tom and Serge from Kasabian.
The Clunys the best venue in Newcastle (as long as you're not up the stairs), off to see Belleruche there tomorrow!!

guess that answers my complaint ! i was indeed up the stairs leaning against the barrier about 4 foot from the stage. like you say, the venues excellent though

Wow. They were absolutely unbelievable in Nottingham last night at the Rescue Rooms. It's a lovely intimate venue that almost seemed to have been designed for John's voice, it was absolutely packed to the rafters, and they put on a top show.
My personal highlight was the double hitter of Because, then Radiation. The band were great, even despite John admitting he was having some throat trouble and was sipping Lemsip throughout the gig - it was unnoticeable.
Was chatting to John afterwards and he seemed amazed at how full the venue was, he said the last half a year has been amazing for the band.
I am now left in no doubt that they were robbed by the XX.
I can only hope they are back at Glasto next year, headlining Avalon?

I disagree, I love their new album. It's as good as Natural History for me. I think the strings add to whole feel. Each to their own though.
Would love to see them at next years Glasto as I missed them this year.
