Hey all...newcomer here. I've been to Leeds Festival 3 times now and whilst it's always a good time with mates, I'm getting a bit sick and tired with fearing for the worst when in and around my tent at night etc, and the level of idiots is just astonishing. So, I'm thinking it's time for Glastonbury. Everyone who's been always says it's the best of them all, but what makes it that good? Surely there's idiots there too with it being such a huge capacity? Am I definitely making the right decision? Probably silly asking this on the Glastonbury forum!

I saw an idiot at Glastonbury once. It was during Kasabian... I was in almost exactly your position once, ended up going to Glastonbury aswell as Leeds thinking it wouldn't be that much better and it just completely blew Leeds out of the water. A completely different and massively better experience. You have to go to see exactly why though!

I presume by the law of averages there must be some. Maybe it's down to ratios. At Leeds there's a fairly high ratio of idiots to non-idiots so that creates an atmosphere of idiotishness throughout the whole festival. At Glastonbury the ratio is reversed so the non-idiotishness atmosphere created keeps them subdued or they go mostly unnoticed. :)

BTW Sketch there's plenty other festivals which are lacking in idiots, also lacking in big names too though if that's what you're after.

It does sound unbelievable but there actually are very few idiots at Glastonbury, everyone is just so happy and (with the exception of the idiots who do go round robbing tents etc. - a very small minority) relaxed - it brings out the best in people. I am probably the most painfully shy, awkward person in the world but at Glastonbury I swear something changed, I was walking between the stages dancing and singing and not caring who saw me and what they thought (without alcohol). I think people just get caught up in the spirit of it all! (Am sounding far too sentimental - that BBC4 night brought it all back).

I think the people who are idiots are mainly the people who don't go because they love it but because they want to be drunk idiots basically, anyway, you won't find them venturing out much further than the main stages so they don't really bother anyone too much.

At my first Glasto we were walking around the site and a man was snorting something, he then spotted my little sister watching him (she would have been about 6 or 7 at the time) turned bright red and started apologised to my Mum (very anti drugs). She smiled, said that was alright and commented on what a nice young man he was.  :D

Same, well not just Glastonbury, any Gigs in general when the mood is buzzing I come off a cocky cock, but I'm very shy too. That's one of the reasons I love music. :D

I wouldn't say there aren't people at Glasto who don't give a Sh*t. Like the people during Steve last year who tried to set up a Chinese lantern which crashed into the crowd and chased off the people behind us. Then did the same again with worse results.

But generally it is like that. Most people just want to have a good time. I can be a bit high strung, but Glasto just takes it out of me.

That said I was at Green Man this year and it's the first festival where I was about to light a cigarette (the tobacco kind :-)) and looked at the kids around me and moved a bit away. Maybe it's mostly the kind of people these festivals attract.

In terms of camping too, with festivals like Leeds people always 'warn' others where not to stay if they want to avoid certain things (general twatness, fires, robbing etc) is this not the case at all at Glasto? Obviously I know there's going to be a minority who will go around robbing stuff but I don't believe it will be anywhere near the scale of Leeds.

Not really the case at Glasto, some campsites are more lively than others, I go for Dairy Ground or South Park (which is dead at night) cos I like a bit of peace and quite at night.
I think it is different from Reading and Leeds as you cant get day tickets and it is away from any big cities so dont get pissed people turning up for the day etc. There is also a much bigger age demographic and  a lot more space at glastonbury.
Taking a piss in a hedge at Glastonbury is considered a major crime and will get you chased and publicly humilated so setting fire to tents and being a knob is not an option..
There is a bit of tent robbery but I have never seen any serious trouble I think you will love it..

For the most part I would say the people robbing from tents aren't idiots, there's a lot of organised gangs visiting festivals. Twats yes. c**ts yes. Idiots no. <_<

I've been going to Leeds since 99 and pretty much avoided Glastonbury as it just didn't seem the fest for me (far too much "my fest is the best" vibe going on) I finally bit the bullet and went this year aged 28. I must say no words can prepare you for the culture shock that is Glastonbury. You get treated like a person not a customer. The range of things to see and do can't be described. The selection of food and drink is second to none. The After Hours entertainment is better than any city in the world. You can be in one festival but at the same time feel like you're in a different place every ten minutes.

And most of all, the people. The way people seem to be at Glastonbury is unlike they are at the other major fests. Everyone looks out for eachother and is incredibly friendly.

All I can say is definately go to Glastonbury next year and you won't regret it.

I cannot think of anywhere that has such an odd variety off stuff going on. Block 9, The Unfair Ground, Shangri La, The Common. If you were to spread that out over a large city it would be the best entertainment on the planet. Obviously there are places like New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo etc... that have unbelieveable stuff going on, but could you move between them in a short period of time? I doubt it.

Perhaps not better than any city in the world but it sure takes the best parts from them all.

lol sorry for the over zealous way I phrased that last night.

Nah I mean nightlife is good at Glasto but Berlin is one of the greatast nights out ever. And it is very varied and mental.

I think Glasto is good for it but on Saturday we spent about an hour just randomly getting directed to different lines and stuff to end up going to a far far too busy Shangri La. I liked the Stone Circle for the random chat.

Unbelievable, i hadn't been to a festival before and my friends had all been to Leeds, T etc... but i remember watching Tom Jones and Blur and thinking WOW! This is where i want to go in 2010, and I took my friends input into festivals and was extra precautionary when going, especially on my own for 2 days, but this place fills you with the best feelings ever and you don't think it will match it and yeah, i was right it didn't match it! it beat it by like 54566363636 times, it was unbelievable, the most friendly place ever, best activities, best food, best value, BEST Place in the world!
