Nominations are:
Biffy Clyro 'Only Revolutions'
Corinne Bailey Rae 'The Sea'
Dizzee Rascal 'Tongue N' Cheek'
Kit Downes Trio 'Golden'
Foals 'Total Life Forever'
I Am Kloot 'Sky At Night'
Laura Marling 'I Speak Because I Can'
Mumford And Sons 'Sigh No More'
Paul Weller 'Wake Up The Nation'
Villagers 'Becoming A Jackal'
Wild Beasts 'Two Dancers'
The XX 'XX'
A fairly safe line up this year and my personal hope is that 'I am Kloot' bag the prize as (in my humble opinion) it is the best complete album on this list. I can't believe Delphic missed out though - easily my favourite album of the last year and a cracking performance at Glastonbury.

The mercury panel will jizz all over Mumford & Sons.
Cannot believe no Plastic Beach or Tarot Sport.

I'd pick The xx out of that lot. I can't stand Delphic, just sound like a really average indie band who got given a keyboard and a bag of Orbital samples for Christmas. They remind me of Hard Fi

Good description, and a combination that was almost made in heaven for me - that's obviously why I like them so much. You're taking the piss with the Hard-Fi comparison though.
As for the xx. Meh. Classic trick of sticking the 3-4 decent tunes at the front of the album and expose the bands weaknesses with the remainder.

I love Orbital, just can't understand the buzz around Delphic.
Fair enough on the XX, I understand they're not everyones cup of tea. I'll freely admit Infinity does sound like Wicked Game by Chris Isaak. However they were definitely one of my highlights this year in the JP on the Sat.

I would like to see I Am Kloot finally get some recognition, the new album is one of the best I have heard in a while.

Can't see how Dizzee is on there yet Plastic Beach isnt, did Gorillaz turn it down before or something? Seem to remember reading that somewhere and that could explain it.

Gorillaz withdrew themselves from the shortlist when their debut was nominated in 2001.
Would assume that they didn't want Plastic Beach to be considered either and/or the Mercury Prize shortlisters didn't nominate the album because of what happened last time.
Seems a very tame list to me anywhow - of the albums I've heard, I'd want Laura Marling to win. Would imagine The XX must be favourites though.

it looks a pretty safe list, but that may be brought about by the ghost of Speech Debelle.

The Speech Debelle album was pretty awful wasn't it? - even compared to everything else that was on last years list. Perhaps they just need a better judging panel.

whoever's on it, it's just an award. it matters not in the real world.

I have a sneaky feeling that it will be Corrine Bailley Rae for an excellent album, tho as always nobody has a clue

The shortlist generally contains a lot of decent music although also some token jazz etc and some critically-lauded rubbish. This year Laura Marling, Mumford, Kloot, Villagers, Weller, The xx, Wild Beasts and Corinne Bailey Rae all made albums with something to be admired in different ways even if they are never all going to be to everyone's taste. Delphic and Foals for me are both decent fun bands but lack anything particularly noteworthy or special about them that makes them worth the shortlist. As for Biffy and Dizzee the less said the better.
I find Ellie Goulding utterly insipid but she can probably count herself unfortunate to miss out given all the 'critics awards' she's picked up - which just goes to show how subjective all this prize nonsense is.
I feel These New Puritans, f**k Buttons and Marina are quite unfortunate not to make it.
It was obvious to anyone Gorillaz wouldn't get nominated after last time.
The winner itself is usually total bollocks though e.g.
2009: Speech Debelle (over The Horrors, Florence, Glasvegas)
2007: The Klaxons (over Amy Winehouse)
2002: Ms Dynamite (over The Coral, Doves and Bowie)
1994: M People (over Blur, Pulp, Weller and Prodigy).
