When the line up was released my biggest decision was Stevie and Orbital. I have seen neither before but both interested me.
There are a few Stevie songs that I really rate eg. Sir Duke, Lately, Master Blaster but some that aren't so great eg. Isn't She Lovely, I Just Called to Say I Love You etc etc.
In the end I went for Orbital and loved every minute of it. It was so much better than I could have imagined and was deffo the big surprise of the weekend for me. Such a great and uplifting way to finish a great weekend.
I've now finally seen all the recordings of Glasto and have to say I easily made the right choice. I thought Stevie's set was so dull by comparison. And the finale just made me want to fast forward to the end. I know it was done with the best intentions but to have Mr Eavis on stage singing Happy Birthday made me cringe. He looked as uncomfortable as I did watching it.

They both looked like great gigs. I wasnt fully on board the Stevie boat at all pre Glasto, but after seeing him I was delighted.
I saw Orbital in 05 in the same spot and they blew the place away, and from what I saw on tv this year they also made shit of the place this year, melted people!! Looked great.
Thats Glastonbury isnt it? Two great gigs on within 200 metres of each other.

I totally agree with this. I saw the set for Stevie on the TV and it was nowhere as good as Orbital. The set by Orbital felt quite intimate and I didn't regret going to see them over Stevie one bit. It was a great way to end the festival for us-we set off home just afterwards and was a great time to leave on a high note. I agree the happy birthday bit with Eavis was all over body CRINGE!

Thats only because Michael is the worst singer ever! I really enjoyed that. Happy times. I usually dont go for that kind of thing but Stevie nailed it.
Totally get the point about going out with a bang on the Sunday night. I saw the Prodigy last year, was right up the front, and it was total f**king chaos!!

I saw Orbital last year at The Big Chill, and thought they were good, but nothing compared to how good Stevie's set was. When he played Superstition it was one of the best versions I have ever heard, an awesome moment and one I will treasure for the rest of my life (or until my memory starts to go). There were a few cringe-worthy moments (the Lil Stevie "magic potion moment" and the 'dealing with our family issues' moment for example). The Happy Birthday moment was of course cheesy, but how else could Stevie and ME end this year's Glastonbury?

I did have a tinge of regret seeing the Orbital coverage but I thoroughly enjoyed Stevie's set and would have kicked myself more for missing it. I'm sure Orbital will be back again another year, I'll never see Stevie again. I got my "bang" from legging it after Superstition to Arcadia for the fire show and then Bez's Acid House. God I wish I was back there!

Well it may have seemed that way on the telly, but being actually there in the moment it was great and felt like a brilliant way to round off the 40th party. ME made me laugh but not cringe.
Watching it back on the telly, I really enjoyed it because of the memories of being there, but it was far cheesier than I remembered - at the time I remember just being overwhelmingly happy.
I do remember that when he was doing that strange "relationsh!t" bit, thinking if he keeps up this nonsense the crowd are gong to get restless, but he only did one other bit that was as cheesy as that and the warmth of the crowd towards him was so overwhelming that no-one really minded.
Even when he did "I just called to say i love you" he earned instant forgiveness for following it with superstition.
I have seen Orbital before and sometimes loved them and sometimes been left cold. I last saw Stevie Wonder in 1983 and felt totally unengaged, so performances vary from one time to another and it is always difficult to be sure if you're making the right choice.
As it turned out I have no doubt I was in the right place either, but if we all liked the same stuff Glastonbury wouldn't need over 40 stages!

We watched Stevie for the first 3 or 4 songs then headed over to Orbital and I'm happy that we did. I found Stevie a bit boring tbh although I would have liked to have heard Superstition and Happy Birthday but it was great to have a good old dance to Orbital and loved when Dr Who himself came on

remove eavis from the happy birthday bit and it was still cringe. that song is cringe enough as it is, without changing the lyrics to suit glastonbury. amazing set bar that though. even i just called!

My husband started to boo when he did IJCTSILY! Me and my mum tried to gag him whilst the girl next to us said "He'll do bloody Ebony & Ivory next!" but everyone was laughing and happy. As it turned out I had an unexpectedly soppy moment with my mum during that song and just hugged her all the way through and sung it in her ear! It had been lovely to finally take her to Glastonbury and show her what it is that I gab on about all year, and that was just a bit of a moment!

I ended up in bed
I was planning on going to see Orbital so I'd popped back to the tent to pick up a hoody but the moment I sat down I was overwhelmed by tiredness. I was in Top Webbs Ash, so I heard quite a bit of Stevie before falling asleep till 7am the next morning. If only I could have had a few more hours of energy

I thought Michael singing Happy Birthday with Stevie was just about as perfect an ending to the festival as I could have imagined.
(although I was sticking my fingers down my throat for I Just Called.... while dancing with my wife and sister, her son, his girl friend.. it did sort of 'fit'...)

I went to see Stevie and thought it was awesome.
I've since watched Orbital on tv and was a bit meh, so good choice made for me. I've seen other people who weren't there raving about the Dr Who thing, but watched it and thought I wouldn't have been buzzing when that happened. I wouldn't even have recognised your man who is Dr Who when he came on
I think that Orbital are one of the only big dance acts that would have been headlining that I wasn't fussed about
Stevie converted a few of my mates who'd watched the BBC gig that had been on iplayer and really weren't keen, but loved it when there.
I agree that watching it since Glastonbury it probably does seem cheesy but I just remember being there.

+1 saw them there also. If it had not been Stevie Wonder it would have been packed to see Orbital, but it was STEVIE WONDER a living legend!
