DON'T BUY THEM, BRING THEM AND CERTAINLY DONT LET THEM OFF!!!

Seriously...how would you like it if your insides are full of mashed up wire from these things and then your insides rip and then you die???

THIS is what happens to cows!

Sky Lanterns...selfish, stupid, waste of time and money and oh yes...MURDER ANIMALS!

Might look pretty but are now so cliched and dull its not worth it anymore anyway.
Sorry but were you not part of a plan to set these off last year in the Stone Circle?

I think I can answer that on Lucys' behalf with a definitive NO!

This will be my third festival and I've never set one off, they do look pretty cool though especially on the Wed night... However environmental issues asside no doubt there will be thousands again this year. I didn't realise they contained metal parts as they were described 100% bio-degradable although I wasn't sure, but for £13.50 it was worth a punt.
I'll find a use for them, I'll just tie them down to a tent peg in the ground and hover them about 10ft in the air in my garden the next time we have a party or something like that then I can safely dispose of their remains,

I was part of that Sky lantern marriage proposal crew but I didnt know about the cows then.

But actually, the sky lanterns we bought from an Eco wedding company in Lewes last year, the partthat attaches the heater was made from light wood I recall so in fact WE had cow friendly SKy Lanterns

The only time I have really been impressed (other than the wedding proposal) was my first expereince which was while stood in the Glade at 1am on the Friday in 04. I looked over to the Stone Circle and could see 10 strange lights all slowly moving along in the sky horizontally. I had to get my whole gang to look too and we didnt have a clue what it was. Obviously...it was sky lanterns before they got popular and cliched and they had caught a perfect horizontal thermal heading west. Twas gorgeous.

Watching them being set off badly into high wind on the other hand is crap.

And trees have gone up at festivals. I believe one burnt down at Bestival a year or two ago and I heard that Chai Wallahs lost the roof to their main tent last summer at SGP because of the Sky lantern ceremony. :(

We had a few last year, they do look good but are dodgy as hell. The first one we lit went up a way, hit a gust of wind and started to descend. Cue me and a mate running full whack through the tents trying to get to it before it landed somewhere that it wasn't welcome. We decided against lighting anymore after that. My ability to maneuver amongst tents is greatly reduced over the weekend, actually my ability to find my own tent is pretty much non existent!

I bought some cheap ones last year, they were shit. Nearly set fire to some cows on top of the tor, and nearly burnt down someones tent trying to set one off. Not sure if it's because they were cheap ones that they were crap, but they seriously weren't worth the effort. Especially as there's hundreds going up all the time anyway. Save your money, don't bother!

Having seen one come down in a field of tents at Truck festival (luckily someone got there before me and put it out) I agree with them being a BAD IDEA.

I saw some going off at Bestival last year in the wind and was pretty worried about my tent, especially after a lot of the decathalon/Quechua tents were recalled in the USA due to poor flame retardant quality!

When I first read that I was like how did cows get on top of the tower?

More cow friendly but not entirely cow friendly... the wood used in the 'eco' Chinese lanterns is generally bamboo, a cow swallowing bamboo shards can be damaged just as easily as by the wire ones.

Best thing is not to bring them, and even better is for nobody to buy them ever again now they knows just how nasty they are.

That doesn't make it alright. Also Damon Albarn seemed to like them last year.
