Just got 10 lanterns for £13.50 inc. postage off eBay, they arrived this morning. A lot cheaper than buying one on site, last year they were £5 each:

banned banned banned.

The cows don't like them, the tents don't like them, the farmers don't like them.  They iz bad.  There is a dedicated thread somewhere on the forums about the badness of them.  If you want to see your money go up in smoke, donate it to WaterAid instead and leave the crappy lanterns at home.

dismount soapbox.

Pretty sure they shouldn't be selling these at the festival. I know that wax-flares are available but only officially sanctioned ones (ie; you 're not supposed to bring these in).

I'm only agreeing with you because of your stupendous Avatar... but please, leave them at home.

Dry summer fields, cities of tents and flying fire do not mix.

For the person who mentioned sharp bits - the cheap as chips bargain shite ones ain't biodegradable cow friendly.  Please don't light them.  Surely there are better things to waste your money on.

Fair enough.  I didn't think of the fire + grass/tents issue.  I'll leave off then

I always assumed they'd go out before decending until one of tiawans biggest airports had a major fire a few years ago during a local festival where everyone flys them.

I regularly come across these lumps of soggy paper bound with wire on my litterpick. Plenty of them up in my trees and in my fields too. Don't buy them. They are as bad as Vietnam and Afghanistan combined. If not, worse.

DON'T BUY THEM, BRING THEM AND CERTAINLY DONT LET THEM OFF!!!

Seriously...how would you like it if your insides are full of mashed up wire from these things and then your insides rip and then you die???

THIS is what happens to cows!

Sky Lanterns...selfish, stupid, waste of time and money and oh yes...MURDER ANIMALS!

Might look pretty but are now so cliched and dull its not worth it anymore anyway.

Just don't try to set them off after a band while people are milling around - all that hot air from the people means not enough temp difference for these things to rise and they sink... not fun.

But yes, don't send loads of bits of plastic and metal all over the countryside please - looks pretty buy night, leathal to wildlife and farm life by day. Biodegradable ones (if made from plant 'plastic' still take a year or so to break down. Only launch the 'paper' type ones, but they have a higher fire risk, and still litter. Plus only lunch ones that don't use wire to hold the bag open... imagine a cow swallowing that wire (which they do) and what it will do to their 4 stomachs... not nice.

Yes look cool - but so do the fireworks that get laid on for us...

Just don't set them off at all.  They are boring, as LL said cliched and not remotely environmentally/wildlife friendly - which at the end of the day is a big part of what Glastonbury is about.

I carefully selected this item:

"They are also Bio-Degradeable and when the Wax Paper is lit the air inside the sky lantern will heat and the lantern will rise up into the sky where it can lift to a height of between 500-1000 metres before extinguishing and floating gently back down to earth like a parachute"

However, after having a look when they arrived, it turns out the lantern bit is 100% bio-degradable but the heater bit is not; I'm probably going to leave them at home for another day as you can light them and make sure they don't fly off by tying them to the ground, something I don't really want to do around a load of tents!

The slightest bit of wind and these lanterns have a mind of their own. Heard stories of them burning parts of cars etc.
