My mate who is supposed to be stewarding through oxfam has just told me that Glasto told oxfam the wrong number of people required and now they have just axed a lot of people 10 days before the festival with more to be told they won't be working by tomorrow.

Anyone else heard this?

Unfortunately this is true and has meant that 200 potential stewards had to be informed last Saturday that they had lost there place at Glastonbury. This seems to be due to a mix up by the Festival in asking for one number of stewards and then informing Oxfam that they would now only need a lower number.

it's a bit bad considering a lot of folk will have booked certain things for the trip.

That's really harsh and I'm very surprised. If it's the festival's mistake they should try to make arrangements to get these people in other work on site.

You have to give Oxfam the ticket money right? You think they would let the 200 people (drop in the water!) just BUY the ticket at least! MEAN!

This! I mean they must've already allocated those tickets to those people and taken the numbers in to account, right? It'd be totally gutting to have that taken away from you with about a week to go. Very mean.

Unfortunately, due to Glastonbury festival making some unforeseen last minute changes to the festival site, a number of our 2010 stewarding positions have been cut. As a result, we will now not be given enough workers wristbands for the number of Glastonbury stewards that we have recruited. This situation is completely outside of our control and means that we need to cancel the places of 200 Glastonbury stewards.

We have made our selection from applicants who have not previously stewarded with Oxfam at Glastonbury, as we are keen to retain the experience gained by previous stewards. The affected stewards have been randomly selected from those who have not stewarded for Oxfam before, and as we have to reduce our steward numbers, faced with no other alternative, this seemed the fairest way to do it.

All affected stewards will be notified by email and by letter. If you are a new steward with us this year and are worried you may have been selected to be cancelled, please check your email. Also - if you have received or receive your pre-festival letter through the post (sent out in the last two days) you have not been affected .

Please be assured we have made every effort to avoid the situation.

Is this a rare thing to happen? I'm stewarding for Latitude and Bestival with Oxfam and would be gutted if this happens to me!

Seems very harsh so close to the fest as people may have made arrangements and booked time off work.  The very least they could do is give those people the option to buy a ticket at face value - or even a discount as compensation.

If this had happened to me I would be so gutted.

As someone says, surely these people could be offered tickets instead of their deposit back.

This is terrible news. Poor souls.
