I don't hardly smoke the stuff much nowdays, but I remember a few years back it was all pretty relaxed and there was actually a big marque where you could go in,and some cannabis boffin would tell you the exact origin of your stash(before Skunk/hydro).
The police weren't bothered at all,but one of the funniest things I've ever seen and one of the most enduring memories of my first Glastonbury, was in the pyramid field, when a policeman and women started having a go at a young couple having a smoke,a big crowd gathered around them as they loudly berated the perplexed stoners, eventually the police woman grabbed the spliff looked at it,took a big toke, then snogged the policeman, then they both took there clothes off, before wandering off,to everyone's cheers.Hilarious.
Thinking about this,I don't think they were real police, but what I'm wondering is if i do have a little smoke and the old bill clock me,is it an issue,or do I have to play it careful.
Happy-Days.

I wouldn't say its as relaxed as that but police generally won't take it off you if you're walking about smoking. Security at the gates are more likely to in my opinion. I think the police are more concerned about dealers, thieves and violence.

I suspect you may be right...
I think it's fair to say that people turn the other cheek but Glasto isn't an excuse to break the law so people should expect to be pulled up if they take the mick.

You've more reason to worry about the security teams, not just on the gate but around the site. I've seen an aggressive stance being taken by them both around the campsites and in the stages areas. I think you have to be much more discreet about skinning up now. I've never seen any hassle from police - infact one stood over my partner a few years ago while he was skinning up, partner looked up in horror, and policeman just grinned, laughed, and walked away!!!

I get the feeling the police ignore it so long as you dont rub their faces in it

I was pretty open last year (hell, I'm pretty open outside of glasto) and the police had no concerns. The police at glasto were brilliant, they care about the thieves, the violent, the morons who ruin it for others. They are not looking to bust you for a henry of homegrown.
Last year I got to chat to the chief superintendent of avon and somerset constabulary during the weekend and he pretty much said exactly that also...his concern was that people had fun, were safe and caused no harm to others. The police onsite were, simply put, brilliant; they totally entered into the spirit of things.
Security however, another matter. I had no issues personally, but I saw a couple of incidents and have heard of much more (although I take what I hear with a pinch of salt if I didn't experience it myself). Do not let security see you skinning up, getting your gear out or anything that may encourage a search, this can lead to a heavy handed scene that is not pleasant and certainly NOT in the spirit of the festival.

Saw a good few people openly smoking last year, although it has to be said it was in the outer regions of the fest (Park area, Arcadia, Green fields etc.) not in the main stages and markets. Even saw a fair few indulging in other stuff without trying to hide it and no-one was bothered. I think the Police do turn a blind eye and are probably more interested in the people's actions than their recreational substance of choice.

Security are the main concern - last year saw a security guy in the campng area - who smelt dope, shouted that he could smell it and went running off looking for the source. Most ridiculous OTT reaction I have ever seen.

a couple of years ago i saw some guy skinning up on the bonnet of a police land rover! the bobby just told him it wasn't a good idea, he gave him no stress at all. well funny!

As above, think they turn a blind eye but equally be discrete...and they will go up to the stones.
Remember couple years ago, the steward on the entrance protesting to the police how they weren't allowed up there.
...plus remember seeing about 10 policeman on bikes cycling up the hill, after presumably a dealer. I'd say it's a given that an undercover or two are up there to look out for dealers, but I think recreational users should be fine.
Seems less of it available at Glasto aswell compared to 2003-04ish, seem to get offered MDMA at the stones more now.
As for searches, never once been searched on the gate, but if coming by train from London, be prepared to walk between two columns of 8 policeman each side, and drop your bag to let a sniffer dog smell it.

The one place they can't search is down your knickers/boxers

Whats the deal if they do search you and find something? Full on arrestage or just confiscation, and do they make you leave the site?
Oh and does anyone know security's stance on laughing gas/whippits/whatever you want to call them?

I'd recommend pure common sense and discretion, can't go wrong if you're just a little bit careful about where and when you indulge.

I was serched last year for the first time. They went through everything however I had a sacrificial bag which i duly handed over. The main stash was well hidden and wasnt found. No trouble at all just let me go.
Also, DONT STOP NEAR SERVICE STATIONS NEAR BRISTOL. POLICE HAVE A STING OPERATION GOING READY TO STOP CARS AND SEARCH EVERYONE

That combination, particularly with the last sentence, just made me snort pepsi max through my nose!

Also, in 08, I was skinning up in the jazzworld field on the Friday night and a copper stood over me. I looked up and thought, "bugger, I've lost my weed". The exchange went thus:
"do those papers have bananas on?"
"...yes"
"Ooh, do they taste like banana?"
"yeah, they do"
"oh that's brilliant!"
...and he wandered off.
The day before in the same field I had seen two police officers violently arrest a lad. As I turned around to see what on earth was going on, they stopped mid action, posed, and I realised that they were posing for a photo for his mates. As they laughed and walked off, I noticed one of them had a flower tucked in his helmet. The police at Glasto are AWESOME.
The security are not.

Last year me and my friends were literally sitting right in front of our tent, skinning up, when a security guard came along and took half of my friend's stash. He was sympathetic in a way, because he intentionally let him keep half of it, but the security probably just smoke it themselves...
It was incredibly unlucky but the truth is you gotta be careful even when by the comfort of your own tent..
