Hurrah for all the Kasabian naysayers!  Banter, we love it.

I still think they put on a good live show, and are certainly better live than on record.  Not sure if I'd bother to see them live any more though (a) as I've seen them enough times and (cool.gif there's more than enough fresh new stuff around these days to keep me otherwise occupied.

And I also think the Floyd comparison is a bit much.  Everything is relative, and nobody has produced music of that quality for many a year.  But at least Kasabian have a go.

Editors have gone right downhill in my opinion, I've listened to the new album and it might as well have been Depeche Mode.  Have they had their guitars stolen?

There's a mixture this year. Using the term broadly, a few examples in my opinion...

Ace 'indie'; The XX, Phoenix, Foals, The National, Grizzly Bear, Broken Social Scene, Vampire Weekend, Beach House, Tegan & Sara, Dirty Projectors

Landfill 'indie'; The Cribs, Bombay Bicycle Club, We Are Scientists, The Courteeners, Editors, Mumford & Sons, Jamie T, Ash

Can't see how you can lump The Cribs in with that lot. Decent first album, excellent  2nd and 3rd but treading water since Marr arrived. Still one of the best bands of the decade though.

Ash don't really belong in that list either. In fact i'd almost  reverse your lists!

Check out Extra Life...

Anyone into The Legendary Shack Shakers?

Editors did say that there album was gonna be inspired by Blade Runner , guess they did not want
to make a 3rd  that was guitar based , saw em perform a new song few months back and it was
piano based , so who knows whats next

Oh look another "my taste in music is better than your taste in music" thread ...... just what I've been waiting for.

Check out Terry and the Teatowels, I believe they're playing by the bins next to the noodle bar in west holts on Sunday morning.  The next Stone Roses ..... mind you when they get popular I'll drop them like a bad habit.

Peace out y'all.  cool.gif

Taste is like opinion.  Massively subjective.

But, to the OP...

I also sort of fell out of love with indie as far as the soundalike bands coming through that seemed to be EMI sending graduates to jarvis cocker's wardrobe department.  That isn't to say that THAT is indie anyhow, as far as I'm concerned, which is more about how you got your music out than how you dress or whether you have a guitar.

Good new music is still coming through, I'm older now and less of it is for me, but I'm sure there is still great stuff in there for the generation it's aimed at.  Personally this year I have loved the mumfords album, dubFX, dizzee's latest offering, plastic beach and a few singles, so it hasn't been bad considering only 5 full months have passed, as far as I'm concerned.

Vampire Weekend have a couple of good songs, but come on they're pretty bland. They're basically Graceland performed by lounging Willamsburg hipsters

That's a good description to me but it doesn't sound as negative as you mean it to!

There is some sensational music around at the moment. You just have to look a bit harder to find it.

TBH, I think trying to categorise music is almost impossible.  Indie to me means the 80's stuff that wasn't cheesy shite and on independent label.  It obviously doesn't mean that to people now from reading this thread.

BUT I do realise that there are a lot of acts who have been spawned and died in recent years who fit a stereotype that Radio 1 call Indie and most of them are utter revolting foetid shite.

I think I stuck up a similar point on another thread, but the style of music, the instruments or manner or equipment on which it is composed and performed and the label it get's stuck with by DJ's and Journos means nothing.  You hear it and it's good or it isn't.  Anyone looking through my iTunes library would think it was put together by a committee as there's Iron Maiden, High Contrast, RATM, Doves, A Camp, Laura Marling, Corinne Bailey Rae, Elbow, Therapy?, Basement Jaxx, Magic Numbers, REM, NWA, Pendulum, Local Natives, The Rifles, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, The Beatles, The Bees, La Roux, Depeche Mode, Little Richard, Madness, The Specials, The Bluetones, Reef, Eurythmics, Ice Cube, etc etc.  It couldn't really be more varied but I love all of it.  If I don't love it , I don't buy it or I delete it.

I do however draw the line at what people call RNB these days (which isn't Rhythm & Blues) as it's all w*nk.  Oh, and any opera, showtunes or anything from musicals.  Just no.

Almost exactly my own tastes there, this so called rnb thing is just pulp production pop crap, imo.

I am clearly getting old.

Are there bands out there who sound great, original and inspiring and with some thing more to say than I do want to have sex with you or I dont want to have sex with you?

And who will go into the music hall of fame from this last decade too?

Joanna Newsom springs straight to mind. Without doubt one of the most talented musicians today.

Ignoring my own tastes in some cases bands that I think will stand the test of time. I've probably forgot a few as my memory is appalling!

Arcade Fire
The National
The Strokes (although nothing has been out of this world since Is This It)

But if you are talking about bands that will go into the hall of fame you've got to include Oasis / Blur etc and then some shoddy Boy / Girl bands too as they sold some records.

Original artists that I'm into - i'm not saying these are going to sell millions of records, but they aren't your mainstream fodder or Kings of Leon:

Soap&Skin
Warpaint
She Keeps Bees
Blood Red Shoes
Slow Club
Beach House
Cold Cave
Dirty Projectors
i like trains
St Vincent
TV on the Radio
and I'm going to mention The Joy Formidable again as I love them but that's enough self-indulging!

Is Julian Cope good again yet? I've had enough of LAMF, Brain Donor etc.

I want a return to Jehovakill and Peggy Suicide stuff.

I shouldn't be saying this because a friend is involved with LAMF and Brain Donor.

Problem is that in the era of X-Factor/Pop Idol etc. that chart success and huge sales bear absolutely no relation to the quality of the work, it's about how it's marketed to the gullible, fast food eating TV junkie idiots.  There is ALWAYS great music about, but in dark times as these you have to look harder.

In terms of acts with longevity and quality from recent times I'd probably single out Doves.  Great great songs with depth and feeling, created with craft and guile by people who know how to write, perform and produce outstanding music.  I'm as surprised now as I was when their debut album came out that they aren't mega-star popular.

Funny when Doves first came out I had them as a dance band jumping on the undie wagon, now I loved the Sub Sub stuff but that first album is fecking brill & they get better with every album.
