Has any one else felt the same over the last 18 months that most of the Indie bands are just a bit bland, with nothing really to say and no great licks to say nothing with.

There's just been a lot of landfill recently, and you have to look harder for the good stuff.

There's no 'recently'. There's always been masses of landfill.
Just look back at line-ups from (say) 5 years ago, and amaze yourself with how many times you say "whatever happened to them...?"

Yeah, I'm hoping to find a lot of new music this year by avoiding the big 3 as much as poss. Last year I got a little lazy and kinda hung around them all a bit too much and regretted it.

There's a mixture this year. Using the term broadly, a few examples in my opinion...
Ace 'indie'; The XX, Phoenix, Foals, The National, Grizzly Bear, Broken Social Scene, Vampire Weekend, Beach House, Tegan & Sara, Dirty Projectors
Landfill 'indie'; The Cribs, Bombay Bicycle Club, We Are Scientists, The Courteeners, Editors, Mumford & Sons, Jamie T, Ash

There are plenty of good indie bands about, mainstream indie has always been hit and miss.
If you only listen to Radio One and read the thoughts of Arctic Monkeys + Vampire Weekend, then yes you might be having a bit of a bland patch, but there are so many good bands going on at the moment... Not that many at Glastonbury, but some are.
Joy Formidable, Foals, The National, Blood Red Shoes, Dirty Projectors, WAS, Beach House, These New Puritans, Fanfarlo + Lissie off the top of my head.
I wish we'd seen some Warpaint action at Glastonbury though - for something amazing and different check them out.
BBC intro stage might have some good ones too. Fingers crossed.

Well you're in the minority it seems. I can't think of anything nicer than spacing out in the JP tent with a pint at hand during their set.

Oh c'mon - it doesn't get anymore landfill than Joy Formidable. Dreadful dreadful - live at least.

I thought the same. Spacing out? More like falling asleep and spilling your pint!

interest thing about this list is that everyone on the ace list apart from the xx and foals are from abroad, whereas the landfill group are all British apart from WAS. The American groups such as grizzly bear and dirty projectors are far more experimental but not to the extent that it isn't enjoyable to listen to. Not that I can talk really being in a British indie band haha.
all I'm trying to say is if you need your faith restored in music go and see grizzly bear, dirty projectors and beach house.

It ain't just me. Last summer I saw them have 3,000+ people put their fingers in their ears for the duration of their set.
I've not heard them on record (not so I've noticed, anyway), so they can perhaps gain a bit of credibility back that way, but live they were truly dreadful. Dirge of the very worst kind.
At the same festival a year or three before I saw the same thing happen with Bombay Bicycle Club, while the indie kids were raving about them on forums such as these. And now they're considered a perfect example of landfill.
So make of that whatever you will. What I make of that is that I'm ahead of the game. Come back in three years and tell me again I'm wrong.

here here.
the naughties were a pretty bad decade for those of us not into generic guitar based stuff. they were the equivalent of 90s boybands, all put together by record labels and identikit tunes. but hey, at least they played their own instruments!

Perfectly summed up I reckon.

One of the main problem is that all british indie bands want to do is cling desperately to britpop - british "guitar" music has been totally retarded by the success of bands like Oasis and Kasabian. I mean yeah, give the people what they want, but if a band tries to be a bit more interesting like Los Campesinos or Copy Haho and they're pretty much ignored. British guitar based music is so unbearably living in the past - you have to look to the dancier scenes to really find some kind of innovation.
All of the interesting "guitar" music seems to come from North America, and in particular Canada.

Vampire Weekend have a couple of good songs, but come on they're pretty bland. They're basically Graceland performed by lounging Willamsburg hipsters
