A serious question here. Why the need to go so fast??

Well, over 100 miles, doing 90mph instead of 70mph means 20 minutes less driving.

If you don't much enjoy driving and would rather be doing something else, that's 20 minutes worth saving.

For the same reason I don't deliberately walk at half speed.

I drive at a speed which I find comfortable and on a motorway in a car like mine that's quite a comfortable speed to drive at. I don't feel like I'm rushing at that speed, just driving normally and I don't see the point in deliberately slowing down.

Apart from anything else, I would have to actually concentrate on deliberately slowing down and watching my speedo (like you do in average speed check areas) which takes my mind of the business of driving.

The time that you spend driving is pretty much the only time that you're unable to do anything else apart from concentrate on the job at hand. Therefore it's completely dead time and life is too short to waste time pootling along a motorway at 60mph when you could get there 50% quicker driving perfectly safely and comfortably at 90mph.

Speed doesn't kill... it's the slowing down quickly that does it.

I agree that the Police offer a valuable service at Glastonbury and have to be there. I just wish they could have some limits. I really don't want to see Police wandering through the campsites first thing in the morning or up at the stones. Punters need some space and not be watched big brother style 24/7. Walk the main pathways, if there's a problem then I will give you a whistle and you can come running. You are after all public servants, I am the public thus you are my servants. So wind yer necks in and act the part.

Sorry turned into a rant which I didn't expect.. I must look like a dodgy type because I seem to get searched all the time and it does my head in.

And do you know anyone who's been charged with speeding for doing 90 on a motorway in decent conditions?

Seems to me the police do a decent job of showing discretion when it comes to motorway speeding.

I have and it cost me three points and a £60 fine. To be fair I should've been paying more attention to my speed but sometimes all it takes is a momentary lapse and you can be doing a tonne without realising.
I was on a long straight clear stretch of motorway in the middle of the day and because my car's fairly new and smooth to drive 90/100 miles an hour can seem just like 60/70 sometimes.

90 on a dry day, I'd be surprised to get stopped.

100 -- in my opinion that's too fast, and one should expect a fine.

... and as you say, if you don't have cruise, you aim for 90, and your car is powerful, it's easy to drift up to 100 without noticing; so be careful and don't do that.

Haha, yeah that would be nice I suppose but i've learned to accept the police presence as a necessary evil these days. To be fair i've never had a single problem with the police on site and they've always seemed very nice and often get in to the Glasto spirit as much as many festival goers.
If i've had any problems it's been with some of the private security rent a thug firms. Only a small minority of them but given the choice i'd rather have more police and less security guards. At least you know that the police are expected to display a certain level of professionalism.

To address your other point also, I can just imagine trying to tell the police to stick to the main pathways and away from the campsites/stone circle etc.
"hello mister policeman can you please stay out of these areas unless you're summoned as people want to do illegal stuff without getting their collars felt?"
Haha, yeah I can imagine the response that'd get.

Ha, I wish it was powerful. It's a 1.2 litre Fiat 500 but it still does 100 no sweat if i'm not careful.
I was actually lucky in that i'd drifted up to over 100 and it was only blind luck that an oncoming car flashing it's lights made me check my speed. By the time i'd hit the speed trap i'd slowed to around 90.
I must point out that i'm not a fast driver and wouldn't knowingly break the limits on purpose but some people should realise that in many modern cars it's so easy to creep up that extra 15/20 mph without even realising.
One point that was well made earlier in the thread is that it's safer to drive a little faster unwittingly than spend half your time distracted by obsessing over the reading on your speedo.

If you can go 20mph faster than you intended without realising it, in a 1.2 litre car, i'd be very worried about what else you might miss on the road, frankly.
