Hi there

Haven't been to Glasters for a couple of years, up until then had been each time since '89.  We've recently purchased a campervan and managed to get a campervan field ticket but we are unsure as to what should we expect ie room, facilites, safety etc in the field.  To be honest, I'm a tad nervous about staying outside of the fence.

Please could those with experience help us prepare.

Room - at least enough for your campervan and an awning (sometimes allowed another tent, depends on the steward really).  There are varying sizes of vans accommodated.  Just make sure the steward helping you park leaves enough room to one side if you have a side awning.

Facilities - Minimal!    A grass pitch to park on.  A few turdis type toilets (but not necessarily in every field).  A water pipe (that tends to run dry from time to time during the festival).  A tank for emptying chemical toilets (again not in every field).

Security (hit and miss, sometimes you see them sometimes you don't).  The campervan fields are crossed by thousands of pedestrians going to/from car park to/from Festival entry gates.  I wouldn't leave anything particularly valuable in my van as the campervan fields are pretty deserted the majority of the time (as most of us are inside the Festival for hours on end).  Break-ins have happened in the past, just like anywhere else in Britain.

If you have a laptop or very expensive photography gear etc. then consider using the free 24 hour lock-ups (donations welcome) inside the Festival.  Drop your valuables off at the end of your day and pick them up again in the morning.  

Otherwise nothing too much to worry about...

was there last year - absolutely no problems apart from having to climb the hill of death when leathered...bit of piece and quiet to catch a few zzz's and we put 4 tents up round the trailer tent...

I wish it was more clear what they actually mean by "tents can be pitched behind the vans". Last year doing that in the position we were in would have blocked the path between rows.

Looks like this year i need to pitch 2 tents by the van and the awning. Has anyone ever been told to take tents down around the camper vans?

yes i have and esp if they encroach fire lanes between rows.

Last year the van behind us had about 5 tents spread in a circle and they were okay.....I think as long as there is a gap you are alright. We always put up a small tent up to allow muddy boots,wet coats etc ( wont be needed this year as going to be hot and sunny) and stick it by the awning/van door.

A lot depends on what day/time you arrive and how much space you can get, you need to get as much space as you can to the side of the van, they do not like too many tents behind because they block the lanes.

The fire regulations state that tents should only be put up behind vans (essentially each van should get a pitch roughly 6m x 7m),

People have been asked to move tents in the past, and as said depends on how close together the vehicles are.

By "behind the vans" I believe they mean between the two rows of vans.  i.e. not in the fire lane and not between your van and your neighbours on either side of you.  Of course "behind" depends on whether you've reversed into your spot or not.    To be fair, most campervan field stewards are reasonably flexible in applying the rules.  In my experience safety comes first, rather that arbitrarily applying rules, with the ones I've met.

Nothing much to add to what others have said.

Effectively paying for a glorified parking space. Toilets are maybe cleaner than others on site, simply because less people are using them.

We got caught a couple of times queuing to get into the site at peak times, so might want to keep half an eye on that - nothing major, just a 10-15 min delay.

Sometimes fire regulations just don't make sense. Really strict with the campervans yet, you can have a bloody bonfire next to your tent in the camping fields
