Terrific Orbital moment in the middle of this.
"The Mozarts of techno. A couple of bald chaps from Kent or somewhere. With lasers for eyes."
that has sorted my saturday night out.

Yep those are the boys. just bought 2 pairs :P

Yeah you want 'em in black not horrible yellow...

Been my staple torch at glasto for a few years now. Great for visting the loo in the dark - hands free.

Wait... that sounds wrong...

They aren't very comfortable though and the bulbs blow REALLY easily. Right pain in the arse. Orbital got sick of this and fixed the problem by sticking mini-maglites into the plastic frame. They've got new LED ones now with comfy sunglass frames and little eyeshields to stop the spill from the torches shining in their eyes.

its going to be a very similar scenario to last years end to the festival with blur and the prodigy up against each other... standing (not dancing because after five days partying most peoples legs will be totally knackered!) in the flat featureless, soulless other stage field listening to a big name dance act that are way past their best on a pretty quiet sound system a lot of people will be wondering if they've made the right decision, then later in the night they'll bump into mates/randoms telling them how amazing the atmosphere in the pyramid field was and what an amazing performance they witnessed, then when they get home and see the highlights on tv they'll be kicking themselves for years to come that they missed a once in a lifetime opportunity to see a legendary end to the festival in favour of some has beens knocking out the old same set of tired tunes that they have been/will be trawling round the festival circuit for years to come, i for one wont be making that mistake again!
This is my worry, I did exactly the same last year.

Anyway, has there been any official update re: Other stage speakers. Having some harp noise or whatever it was from Glade last year overcome the Prodigy sound was heart-wrenching. Anyone heard anything? (exactly what we were saying last year at aforementioned stage, no pun intended!)

Re: Orbital vs Steve, I am undecided. Leaning to Orbital, but that's probably 'cos I've just read this thread :P

It isn't the speakers, but the audio crews/sound nazi's that are the problem. The Other Stage has easily enough PA to cope with anything thrown at it, but dance bands have often been the victims of over enthusiastic noise policing at Glasto. It's entirely unfair and utterly ridiculous when the nearest cafe bar can be heard over the bleedin Prodigy.

We live in hope...

My new sig...WHEN it allows me to bloody well post it...keep getting 'signature is too long' blathering message when its shorter than what I already have!!! Grrrr.

As for those Unilites...me has owned and used many pairs since 1995 - current pair is 10 years old - although I did 'acquire' a new pair last year when I found a dropped pair outside my tent and they werent mine. I thought they were but later found my own pair in my tent.

Here follows words of warning and tips for new users of Unilites...

1. If wearing in a crowd, do NOT wear them on your face and look directly at people especially if you have new batteries in. EVERYONE will hate you as you will blind them as you look at them.

2. Place them 'at rest' as in tucked behind your ears and resting on your forehead if walking through a crowd so as not to blind folk (apart from unfeasibly tall people!) :P

3. If wearing for any length of time on your face/nose, it is recommended you perhaps add some cushioning to the bit that rests on your nose. The 'glasses' are bloody heavy and hurt after a very short period of time. If female, having your hair up helps as the lights can rest on the pulled back hair.

4. Remember/note which way round the batteries go in when removing to replace mid-gig.

5. Always have a spare set of the battery holder thingies. Without them, you dont get no light cos the batts DONT stay in...obviously.

6. When asked 'oooohh woooooowwwww maaaaaannnnn...like where did you get those from?' from f**ked people passing you by at the various festies, the general answer is IWantOneOfThose.com and then carry on walking and try not to get into long conversations.  :P

7. NEVER lend them to people in the crowd.

8. Or take the monetary offers you are given unless the amounts are very high.

9. ALWAYS have them on you at night time...they are great for freaking people out when you come out of the turdis' and longdrops. Obviously useful for every evening lighting up reason - guy rope spotting, toilet checking, stash dropping.

10. Replacement bulbs are purchasable from little hardware stores and Maplins.

11. Luckily these days, a lot of people are either a. not phased or amazed by them anymore b. know where to get them from.

12. The only really annoying comment is from people who go 'ooooohhhh its a f**king alien' THIS is when you go over and correct them and tell them they are Orbital glasses...and then bore them to death with how bloody marvellous Orbital are. :P

Message ends.

Come on, there's some really frenetic, hard dance music around at the moment. By comparison Orbital is quite laid back. For the most part it's harmonious!

If you spent all your time listening to nutters like Coloureds, you'd call Orbital chilled out:

This Orbital: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gd-QkRA8Ik
Not saying it isn't a good tune, it is a classic.. but apart from the few nutters at the front, most of the crowd are just stood still....

In comparison: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBeBH2G26Ck
Epic tune, epic lights, epic lasers.. more upbeat song too... massive crowd reaction!

I've seen them stacks of times over the years and while some of their tunes are chilled, the balance of the set is not. Last year on tour they played a full-on set with barely a chance to catch the breath and I'd hazard a guess that they'll do the same at Glastonbury this year. There weren't that many people standing around, that's for sure.

Try the Live Glastonbury cd for starters. It contains a goodly selection of a lot of their best tunes along with the sound of the crowd.

They weren't a black pair were they? And you weren't camped in Woodsies/Wicket Ground? I lost mine on the way back to my tent at Glasto last year when I got a bit too 'refreshed'...
