A post on the Glastonbury pages about a mass release of sky lanterns and someone mentioning that they're banned has set me wondering whether they're allowed at Reading or maybe just not specifically banned.
I know that they're some reasons not to have flying fire in a campsite but I'd imagine that the risk is relatively low as they got stright up as soon as they get going.
Has anyone ever seen them being flown at Reading - I remember a few on the last night at V and they were a great way to close the festival.

if you watched arctic monkeys set on bbc from last year you'll see when they pause on if you were there beware, a lantern goes up, it looks so perfectly timed and amazing and they just wait till it floats out of view then come back in.

There certainly were lanterns over the campsite last year as well. Not many at all. Like maybe one or two was all I saw. But there were some

Theyre pretty dangerous, they can fall and still be lit.

I think the less things involvling fire at the festival the better.

fair enough.
I've never actually one before, don't know how they work really.

its basically a paper bag over a frame, which has a substance that burns, in a block, attatched to it
but depending on how the burning bit burns, it can burn and fall from the frame - if its close to land still, that could start a fire. If it hit a tent then it would singe right through and set on fire probably.

Thanks for all your thoughts on sky lanterns and despite their fantastic coolness I'm going to agree that flying fire in a campsite will be a bad idea so, if I do bring some, I'll not be setting them off in the festival site.

they burn out long before the hit the ground.... the fuel only lasts 5 minutes :-p

5minutes is enough time for it to burn off the frame that holds it?
I believe in either singapore or vietnam they have been banned because in one year, there were 20 full scale forest fires caused by them.

Loads were set off on the wednesday/thursday of glastonbury last year
whilst it looked amazing! there were a few that didn't take off properly and only made it about 10ft off the ground before catching alight and falling to the floor. In a tent city this is not ideal.

If people are going to start worrying about the quite frankly minimal risk of using sky lanterns I can only presume then that every one will be terrified at the prospect of open fires around all the camp sites of the fact that on sunday night the whole place is gunna get blown apart with huge fires and knocked over toilets...
Glasto 2007 saw at least 300 go off over the weekend, didnt see a single one hit the ground.
If they dont work its obviously being setup wrongly...

Yes but they can still land days later in some unsuspecting persons garden (yes, i've experienced this) with the potential to cause a fire. As long as the festival goers are okay though....
And like that person said, the forest fire fact wasn't a lie either.
