As well as the great atmosphere of 60,000 England fans watching in 2004, I was there in 1998 when we beat Colombia. Unlike 2004, it was on a Friday evening when bands where playing. They put it on in the old cinema field (which was a lot more sizeable than the current one) and it was absolutely packed. Thousands stayed for the whole game in the torrential rain and again there was no trouble and not one hint of racist chanting. Witnessing racist chanting live at an actual football match these days is very rare. I too have heard the abhorrent chant you refer to Russy, whilst watching an England v Turkey game and as someone who attends a lot of football matches was shocked and appalled. But despite what you might think these chants are now very rare and unlikely to be heard at most football grounds, let alone Glastonbury festival.
I for one am looking forward to seeing England win on the Saturday eve at Glasto and then having a funking celebration with George Clinton!

fair enough mate. I freely admit I havent been to an England game since, it has just always stuck with me. It is amazing that such things still go on in this day and age.

It would just destroy me if glastonbury ever got polluted by that sort of crap.

As you say though, it is unlikely to happen. But I do think the crowd in recent years has taken a turn for the worse and has much more of a nasty side to it compared with certainly 1998 and even 2004.

If we had such twattish behaviour at Glastonbury, I would be amazed.  But you're quite right - we don't want it.

Personally, I think the crowd has improved immensely in recent years.  The first year I went was 2000 and compared to my last Glastonbury (2008) it felt downright unsavoury in parts.  The superfence has kept a LOT of scum away.

Maybe. I guess there probably is an element of "rose tinted glasses" going on when I think back, especially to the festivals of the 90s. I cant really remember much about the crowd at all. I remember drugs were easier to get, and miles better, though!

I think we all agree though. None of us want any of that racism/violence rubbish at glastonbury.

We just have different solutions. My solution is to ban the football, the rest of you is to rely on the spirit of glastonbury to win through.

Let's hope I'm wrong and you're all right!

(I am however right to say that flaming lips will be miles better than U2 though...)

Possibly. :P :P

But even you will agree that I Am Kloot will raise a lot of eyebrows when they wow everyone with their new material.  And old material.

As a Scot (ducks for cover) living in England it is interesting watching this debate

If I was at home I probably would watch the match- as I'm at Glasto and there's so much else going on I probably won't but agree with others that it should be shown somewhere.

Personally I think showing it on Pyramid or other stage is not a good idea as after all it is a music festival- but on the other hand is anywhere else on site big enough to show it and accommodate a potentially big crowd?

Others have said it worked showing it at the Pyramid in 2004- and I agree it did work- that was partly because it was a Thursday before the main stages had opened.  I think as this is Saturday it makes a big difference

The discrimination against England fans continues to baffle me. Reference's to 2000's trouble is not 2010 and it is not an indication of the current state of English football, nor that of the average football fan.
Any old Tom, Dick and Harry can get on a plane and end up at a Euro/WC event and with a three lions top on they are all of a sudden the true reflection of the English footballing fan - for a start all England Fans are registered with the FA and have criminal checks against them.

I would put my life on the fact that the percentage of dickheads in the England fan base is no higher than that of your local town, or of that at an Oasis / Kasabian / Muse / any mainstream band. I’ve been to a quite a few big gigs and they are certainly more intimidating than a game at Wembley.

For an apparent mature and educated crowd here, there is a very polluted view between a football fan, and a genuine state of the demographics of the country. Football isn't a sole reason for violence / racism / twats etc; it might have been a catalyst on a few occasions and no one can condone some things that have gone on at West Ham / Millwall quite recently,  but no more so than cheap lager, poor facilities, bad parenting, lack of security and countless other measures.

I've actually followed England home and away in recent memory, without referring to a different generation, and the general fan is as honest as they come. I've never seen us lose away (lucky omen! :P) both before and after games have enjoyed drinks with rival fans in bars without encountering any more than good natured banter.
I can also guarantee you that the same can be said about many other countries, just our press does a lot better coverage of the bad side of anything.

Go and watch a game or three in Spain and come back to me about racism in the English game.
You can never eradicate trouble from the game, nor anything, it's a sad state of the world but people need to stop and think about whether the 20 idiotic yobs you see chucking chairs at some over forceful police group are a true reflection of the game, or in fact about what you encounter in your typical Weatherspoons every weekend.

I shall be watching the football no matter what, I love Editors I've seen them over 20 times, but they'll play again before England have a second round match at the World Cup, as will Laura Marling etc etc.
For me it's not a choice. That doesn't mean I don't deserve to be at Glastonbury or have a great time, i've another God knows how many hours to soak in the music etc...

I DO not know if this has been picked up already, i cnt be arsed to read through the whole thread, but if we (england) win the group then our match in the saturday will be a 7:30 pm kick off.

appologies if this has been mentioned already.

so, the tba on the sat morning are for acts i am sure and nothing to do with the workd cup .... so yeah, maybe dr who is the most likeliest of showings.

I really dont think Eavii will risk it. In hope that England come first in there group.

I think he'll have Gaga and TCV lined up for the saturday pyramid TBCs and then the england game could well be on elsewhere onsite.

Right, the next time someone goes down to the farm to take photos can they please ask ME will Englands potential knockout round game be shown and if so where!!!

That should sort it all out for once and all.

I think even worse than saying they won't be showign it will to be leave people in limbo not knowing either way.

there's two tbas around the time of the football, according to the official site.

Muse
Scissor Sisters
TBA
TBA
Seasick Steve
Jackson Browne
The Lightning Seeds
TBA

http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/

....they stick out a bit, considering the rest of the lineup is pretty much fully complete for all the main stages other than the Park which has special guests every year anyways.

As I said, in the other thread, I might be wrong but I still think it'll be shown on the Pyramid. I'm guessing that Scissor Sisters are placed as such to show they're the penultimate band, but that they'll be on a flexible contract to play 6.00pm ish straight after Seasick Steve if we play the Saturday night...then the football...then Muse.

If come 2nd, and play sunday, then two of the Sunday acts will be on flexible contracts to play Saturday night (eg. Jack Johnson and Slash).

If don't qualify, then they'll have two bands already on site playing over the weekend to do a second set. (eg. Rodrigo y Gabriela and Hot Chip).

The three morning TBAs for each day on the pyramid to be someone new (eg. Coldplay), but the evening ones as above.

Again as the other thread, the paramount consideration for GFL will have to be safety and not risking loss of the licence, which I think could easily happen if mass exodus from the site into the surrounding villages, people possibly getting aggressive with the locals if being refused entry close to kick-off time etc.

...it's hard to gauge demand so wherever it's gonna be shown has to be big enough as a precaution, and I think the amount that watch it might grow at festival compared to if you did a poll now. I'm not sure if I'll watch it or not, (and there's probably lots in that camp) but I can see a good percentage that will change their mind and want to watch it, after experiencing the atmosphere for the first game, if it's anything like 2004.

Personally although I agree the football should be shown, I don't think it should be put on the Pyramid screens. It's an international festival which attracts people from around the world. If I went to America I wouldn't expect them to put The Superbowl on the Main Stage and it should be the same at Glastonbury.

And before anyone says it I'd feel exactly the same if it was Scotland. But if Scotland were in the 2nd Round of any competition I'd assume someone had spiked my drink and I'd go for a lie down. :P
