The band supporting Guillemots at Brixton Academy (my first gig!) Was very weird. Their songs didn't sound like songs and from what I can remember there was some random guy just sitting there reading a newspaper.
Weird stuff.

Chrome Hoof supporting Klaxons at Shepard's Bush Empire, my god that was just... I don't know really most probably weirdest band I've ever seen to (Maybe Of Montreal but I quite liked them for the weirdness) . Pretty woeful music, and costumes what I could only describe as looking like the Ku Klax Klan from the future
and oh they had these two dancers either side of the stage swinging these large pole things around. Quite weirrd, I was upstairs in seating and the guys in front of us was leaning on the balcony spelling out S-H-I-T with glow sticks =p

Going back a very long time but I remember seeing The Groundhogs support The Rolling Stones on what was billed as the Stones Farewell Tour at The Colston Hall in Bristol in 1969.
It was ironic in that The Groundhogs were superb and blew The Stones off the stage, The Stones didn't retire but still roll on and meanwhile what's become of The Groundhogs?

upon seeing the thread title I just assumed this was a commentary on the supposed confirmation of Dizzee apparently coming on before U2, and Scissor Sisters preceding Muse.
but if not...
in 1996, i saw Oasis play a gig in Providence, a city about an hour from Boston. Nagoda Hardison was the support. a random local singer. When Liam comes on towards the end of Swamp Song to open their set, the first thing he does is 'thank her' by calling her a 'scruffy c*nt'. Gig is abandoned about an hour in during Noel's acoustic set when a sneaker is thrown at him.
