Long time reader but never felt the urge to post much however last night has led me to sought others opinions on this topic.
Went to a gig last night and it seemed that no matter where i stood somebody was moaning. (i'm 6 foot 4).
It was a standing gig with a big stage and seats in the balcony. I like getting quite close and although it was a sold out show it didnt take much effort to get near the front, its the stopping thats the problem.
Everyone buys their ticket on an individual basis, turns up, watches the show and goes home. There is no 'right' to a certain space in the area. As long as you aren't physically moving people out of a spot to take thier place surely you can stand wherever you want?
Well last night i pretty much got hassle for at least the first 30mins of the gig.
The most common complaint was "cant you stand somewhere else" and "i got here early to get this view"
Now as i said i wasnt barging or pushing people out of the way and both comments could be replied with tit for tat comebacks like "why dont you move" or if you wanted to be rude a dismissve "so what?"
however i'm not of the character to get into random arguments with strangers (i leave that to Larry David) so most of the time i met the abuse with a shrug of the shoulders and a kind of "sorry for being tall" look yet i admittedly didnt make much of an effort to move.
I've never had anyone moan at me at the 6 Glastos i've been too and rarely get it at gigs (could have been the city i was in-it was the big one down south) but its made me think.
Are tall people selfish pricks at gigs or should small people just accept that if they pay for a standing ticket they aren't going to get a perfect view??
Opinions, stories etc all welcomed.

People will moan about anything, you can't help being tall! What do they expect you to do?

You paid your money just like they did. You stand where you like, just like they do.
End of.
DOI: I'm only 6'1'', but my son is very tall (6'8''), and if the shortarses don't like it, tough.

I am 6, 4" and always get moaned at. Tbh I just turn around and tell them to shut their mouths or move somewhere else. It really gets on my nerves, what can us tall people do???

People who are average height or smaller should just suck it up. Anyway it's their fault for not eating all their wheaties when they were a nipper.

You should take a really big hat with you, and when some shortie moans at you, put the hat on, just to prove to them that it could be worse.

Im 6'2" and dont get moaned at that much, if smaller people are pissed off they can move.
Only time Ive been at the other end so to speak was at Rock Am Ring in Germany, HUGE Germans everywhere.

Yep, i am 6ft 4in tall and can often sense the "for f**ks sake i am stuck behind him" sentiment.
That said, i will always offer the space immediately in front of me to anyone who is obviously going to struggle to see (as long as you are polite!)
Rudeness gets nothing.

As a bona fide short-arse my feelings on this are mixed. On one hand, it's no more your fault that your tall than it's mine that I'm short. On the other, if I'm not at the front of a gig then chances are I won't be able to see a damn thing so not having someone tall in front of me is vital. I mean, if I didn't want to see the show I'd stay at home and wait for the bootleg. Not being able to see doesn't just affect your vision, it affects what you can hear aswell. Muffled guitars can be the most woeful thing in the word.
I don't think anyone has the right to tell you where you can or can not stand, what it really comes down to is consideration for others. After all, if you're so tall you can see from anywhere, then perhaps you can choose more carefully where you stand. It is entirely possible to be down the front and a giant, without blocking the view. Just take a look around you and see what you can do.
I mean there really isn't a right or wrong here, so this just my interpretation. An attempt at harmonious living if you will. Being rude and a c*ck is not the same thing as simply being tall and you shouldn't be thrown evils for doing feck all.

to be fair some tall people do take the lash, there was some fkr at one of the stages last year who was about 6 foot 4, who had then decided that his choice of hat was a designer felt traffic cone that added an extra foot and a half to his size.
it did give the numpty's somewhere to aim their guided beer can missiles at though !

I am 6ft 5.
I have never been moaned at all at Glastonbury, although I do feel paranoid about it and most of the time I dont tend to stand straight (usually leaning or being propped up by my girlfriend).
if people are polite and ask me to move, I will if I can especially if they are say under 5ft 5. but if its someone nearer to 6ft then I dont see the problem, surely someone who is 5ft will have the same problem with some say 5ft 7.
equally on the opposite side of the argument, I have just as much as a problem with people who decided to sit on the chairs in the middle of a massive crowd and refuse to move.

I'm 6'3.
I thrive when people moan and whine about not being able to see at a gig. I suck it all up and it empowers me.
I find turning round with a smug grin and simple "wow you should have just seen that bit, it was ace!" a few times during the gig works wonders at cranking up their rage a notch.
Let's face it, what are they going to do about it?
