The new stuff was at best average and a real lack of atmosphere throughout
They refused to play Kids -
Come on guys, you are not that good that you shouldn't play your best songs in a venue that charges £4.20 per pint

But if they feel that song no longer represents them as a band, good on them.
You're there to see an MGMT set, not just 'Kids'. If it doesn't fit in with the new set, fair enough. Saw Yeasayer last month, didn't play 2080.
Sounds like they'll have played stuff like Time To Pretend and that - hits were played, what's the problem?

But it's good to see that punters still expect setlists to be decided by the price of a pint in the venue.

I don't think last night was the greatest performance, and the new stuff certainly sounded a little different than what many people were expecting - myself included.
The atmosphere in the venue really didn't help, but I think that was because it seemed that most people were there to hear Kids and Time To Pretend. I was stood roughly half-way back in the venue and even songs like Electric Feel and Weekend War didn't get much of a reaction from people around me. So having the old stuff not go down as good as it should do, and lots of new stuff (which was what the gig was advertised as having) didn't make for a good atmosphere.
It definitely looks like they're sticking true to their words: http://www.gigwise.com/news/55339/MGMT-Snu...-Coldplay-Tours

I thinks leaving out their big song (of 2) smacks of pretention, nothing else. If there dictated by the fact its popular then its sad not to play it.

I saw them when they played the park and they were great. I doubt I'd go to one of their own gigs but it does make me laugh when fans go to a gig just for one song. I cant quite get my head round that.
I remember reading somewhere that their set list is partly decided on the atmosphere generated by the audience - that they feel certain songs only work live in certain atmospheres. It is no surpise to me to hear that a London audience were quiet and disinterested (and probably talking throughout the songs.) So they are bound not to play their lively songs in that environment.
Crowds at London gigs are often the worst I have experienced anywhere. I think there is a "too cool to enjoy yourself" attitude amongst the so called cool kids who live at home with mummy and daddy in surrey. Sad really.
Of course, certain bands have followings that are always excellent no matter where they are - flaming lips for example have a wondrous following no matter where they play.
MGMT are a nme hyped band and so I bet a lot of the audience were there because just wnted to say they were there, rather than to enjoy the music. People like this are complete tits, and I expect the person who made this thread falls into that category.

Dissagree with that in some points (the one about the atmosphere at london gigs)
I saw Ffyfe Dangerfeild at the London Scala a couple of weeks ago and the atmosphere there was absolutely brilliant. It was an acoustic gig and everyone was really quiet throughout the songs. I mean really quiet. And whenever someone talked during a song another person in the crowd would yell "Shut Up!". It was a fantastic night.

I watched their JP set and I agree - they were crap. As for leaving out their best song, I respect why they did it, but going by their set at the JP, it was the only track they actually look like they enjoyed.
Fine - leave it out if they don't want that one track to 'stereotype' them, but they need to look like they give a shit enough to make sure they can get away with leaving it out. I don't think they can going by that set. The rest of it was very flat.

Some very, very good points here Russy, but we're not talking about a live act who have plenty of great live songs that can compensate. Kids and Time To Pretend were the only songs that I didn't want to fall asleep during, and that's not the fault of the crowd - it's the fault of the band who were very much going through the motions before they ended with those 2 tracks.
Nothing would please me more than MGMT pulling off a cracking show without the need to play Kids at the end simply to wake people up, but I doubt they're capable of doing it.

I gotta say I would avoid them regardless, they are gash.
However, interested by that link saying they were asked to support the Foo Fighters on tour... wonder if that was their last UK tour or if this is more recent... or if they are talking out their arses because they realise that gash + hype = hyped up gash.
