Hey everyone,

I am thinking about going to Oxegen festival this year but I keep hearing really mixed reviews. Can people tell me if it is good? The line up this year looks amazing but i keep hearing about violence and people stealing your stuff etc.

Has anyone been and would you recommend it?

Thanks!

once, twice, thrice no.

i've never been (wild horses and a stage with folk giving out free money couldn't get me there), however i've been to more than enough southern irish festivals over the years to know how the vibe will be. i've heard the stories as well, and i'm sure there were sexual assaults on site last year as well.

Then shut up.

OP, the festival is fine. Lineup delivers, if you like it then go ahead and go:)

Be warned though, its expensive as f**k! Thats my only "gripe" with the festival. Unless your driving, the only way to get there is by bus, which is 20€ return from Dublin city center.

Like ANY festival, there is the odd report of theft/violence etc. Keep your wits with you and you won't have any problems.

Theft/Crime/scumbag wise its onpar with any UK major festival.

how about you get f**ked.

read the rest of my post i've been to plenty of southern irish festivals that would attract the same crowd, and funnily enough i know people who have been, and for you to say that it is on par with any major uk festival re:crime and scumbags is utter, utter balls.

i've never had my f**king leg chopped off, it doesn't have to happen for me to realise it would be shit.

anyone thinking of going to this abortion of a festival deserves a heads up that they would be making an awful decision, especially if they were thinking of travelling specifically to ireland to do so.

and to the OP, just do a search on this forum alone, and you'll get the picture.

Mate, you have no opinion in this, you have never been to the fest.

How could you possibly know what its like? Your basing all your assumptions on what other people have said (and most people exaggerate a great deal if something negative happened) and basing the crowd on "plenty of other southern irish festivals"? So, by this logic your basing Oxegen on Electric Picnic, the only other major Irish festival? If you've been to EP, then you'd know the crowd is a lot different:)

OP, its people like this you don't listen to:)

Oxegen is far from the best festival around, its expensive, weather ins't the best etc.

Good amount of stages though and the lineup is always fairly good. Organisation is a bit average, certainly nothing to brag about, but i've never had any problems with it.

Crowd wise, its mostly 17-25 year olds, Like Reading/Leeds you get a lot people who have just finished school going. I've never seen any real trouble, the odd fight, fire in the campsite IE usual festival stuff. On the last night theres always a big police presence to keep things under control.

I'm assuming your from the UK, so have a look at T in the Park, it shares the same lineup and i'm guessing its cheaper for you to get to?

Ive been to Oxegen since 2006 , camped 2006-2008 but went on d 3 day no camping last year. I had great time each year. Yes there are scumbags around but the years ive been there i never seen anything being done. in 2006 my beer was stolen on the last nite which didnt really bother me cause i was headin home. When you read stuff in the paper of course it is gonna be over exaggerated because its the MEDIA.

As Mr S said its quite expensive not the best run at times although 2008 was very well organised . If you want you could camp in the Green campsite.

Also there are no other festivals in Ireland that cater to the same age group (17-25) , EP is for people from 21/22 and up.

I will be going again this year , not sure if im camping. I dont let other people ruin gigs/festivals for me . If you see anything weird going on between people just ignore them , make friend with the people around you so they will look out for you and vice versa

Way back before Oxegen, and before witness there used to be a festival called the trip to tipp. it was the equivalent to Oxegen of its day, and would have attracted the same crowd, it too attracted a great line up, however it too was an utter shit hole, full of pissed savage c**ts in gaa shirts wrecking shit and generally acting the dick. I've been to that.

Further to that i've been to Homelands in mosney a number of times, and Creamfields at punchestown as well, so i'm sorry to say that your idea that if you've not been to either Oxegen or EP that you don't know the irish festival scene, and the type of f**kwits that populate it, is rather silly.

It is mugs like yourself, who put up with such overpriced shite and crap facilities that mean that the likes of MCD can continue to peddle the same rip off shit year after year.

As Bobtrue says, this is a video made by RTE of the Homelands fest from Mosely in 1999, and by god there is some rough ones in the video.  If your going to it, make sure to bring waterproofs and wellies as it always seems to be rainy around the time of Oxegen and Homelands here.  This will give you an idea of the crowd set for Oxegen anyway.

Well what do u expect people to do if the line up has loads of bands that they wanna see. not go?????? Yes its a rip off but the fact is every year Oxegen has loads of bands i wanna c ,and im gonna keep going as long as i see loads of bands i wanna see.

Yes the festival will attract the scumbags/dance heads because it caters for them as well, if they got rid of the Dance Acts it would help and then have a similar festival to Homelands. Oxegen caters for many different genres so you will get a few different crowds

nice to see you equating fans of dance music as scumbags.

top man.

and if something is a rip off as you've admitted, the sensible thing would be not to go, did you know that for the 200 odd euro that it costs to go to oxegen, you could buy a ticket for a proper festival (you know, without children and scummers wrecking the place), and still have enough money left over to get a flight to go there, and probably more than enough left over for several beers.

but sense and oxegen don't seem to be a decent match.

Went in '02, '04, '05, '06(didn't camp), '07(sunday only).  Rumour has been that it has gotten better but my experience was it was getting worse and worse and it was only the line ups that were dragging me back until even that wasn't enough.

My issues have consistently been:
Oxegen has awful sound in most of the stages.
Crowd has a enough troublemakers, for whateve reason, to make it difficult to be lucky enough to completely avoid them.
There is a limited selection of food and drink with low quality and overpricing common enough.
The organisation is random with artificial choke points in the layout to try and fit 80,000 people in an area that is too small for them.
Security is bullish and unhelpful at the best of times, abusive and violent at the worst.

I'd love to hear if any of those issues have been resolved significantly in the last few years.

Either way this thread has come up here many times over the last few years so have a read through the archives and make your own mind up.  The same people stand up for it each year so someone must have some fun at it, somehow.

I have been to Rock Im Park last year and yes it was better then Oxegen and cheaper but since i cant find people to go again this year i will settle with Oxegen. So im supposed to miss out on loads of bands i wanna see  , ive gotten used to having to play high prices for most concerts (which i wish would b cheaper) but if i really wanna see a band n i can afford it i will go and its the same with Oxegen , Not everyone has a bad experience at Oxegen ive always had a great time all you gotta do is not letter other people/things ruin ur weekend.

Been to oxegen twice and loved it both times. Yes there are alot of young ones there (under 18's) and a few mentalists running about but just stay away from them! Went to benicassim last year and it had its fair share of nut cases as well you will find the odd one at every festival. The only bad thing i rem is the weather rained both times i went but come to expect that now so dont forget your wellies. Yes it is a bit over priced but it has such a good line up and would rather pay that than go to electric picnic! Also going to Rock En Seine this year half the price of oxegen but line up no where near as good so if you like the line up then just go for it!!
