I'm thinking of doing the Oxfam stewarding this year at reading, or maybe another festival, anyone ever done it before? Im guessing its quite hard work, 3 8 hours shifts I think it is.

It really varies from festival to festival. Know a couple of people who did at V last year, and they just had to walk around the arena from 12-6 both days trying to get people to sign up to some campaign, leaving them free to see the later bands. Also know someone who did Leeds who just walked around chatting to people for most of it (I think he had to miss one headliner out of the three.) But I think it can be quite difficult and tiring at times to.
Probably quite a good option if you're slightly indifferent towards the lineup and don't mind missing a fair chunk of it. If you really like the lineup, or you know loads of people going I think there's a good chance you'd miss out on a lot of the fun though.

I signed up for this today for Reading, as well as Glasto and Bestival! Definitely seems like the best way to do multiple festivals on a budget. I'm a newbie but thought I'd give it a go since 1) I'm now a poor student and 2) All my mates are turning into cripples
/going abroad for summer/can't afford to go, so if I want to go to more than just Latitude I have to go on my lonesome!
Actually kind of nervous about it for some reason, but at worst it will be 'an experience', at best I'll be off to three more festivals and have a wonderful time and make new friends after only paying for travel and food
Anyway from what I can gather on the Oxfam steward forums, roles can range from checking tickets/wristbands and manning the gates into the campsite/arena, to wandering around the arena putting out fires, to generally acting as lookout in the tents for anyone who needs help. Apparently they will shift you into different roles to make sure you don't get bored doing the same thing every shift, and to make use of you where needed. Sounds pretty good to me! And you all get to camp in the same campsite as an 'Oxfamily' ahah

I'm in a similar(ish) position. I'm really tempted to apply to do stewarding at Reading as not as many friends are going and it would really save me some money! By the way, going by your picture you look just like the two girls who did the Reading 2009 video documentary thing on youtube. Sorry if I'm wrong but I'm also quite sure you camped the other side of our friends tent next to the little dip in the ground? I'm bound to be wrong! haha.

Umm it wasnt full of guys but I swear the big tent in the video is our friends! You may have heard the distant sounds of our annoyingly loud megaphone! You looking to go again this year?
