However the worst problem was a fatal crash between the M32 and M5 on the M4 which closed the motorway for several hours.
We should not complain... Some poor person had a much worse day than we did..

MrHew, on May 17 2010, 01:31 PM, said:Locals - Unless they have been living there over 40 years they will have known about the festival when they bought the house and will have planned around it. I think a lot of them just go on holiday for that week.I've got a bit of a problem with using the backroads. The locals are impacted pretty hard while the festivals are on and if everyone stat's using the backroads to get to the festival then the whole area is going to be gridlocked and the locals aren't going to be able to get around either. Plus, if all the roads get choaked up then emergency vehicles have no option either.
And don't forget, last year was particularly bad because there was an accident on the M5 which stuffed evrything up.
Emergency vehicles - My driving instructor had a saying "Tyres and tarmac" meaning you should be able to see tarmac before the wheels of the car in front when you stop behind them, if not you're too close*. This gives them a bit of room to reverse/mess up with the clutch and gives you room to kangaroo start or pull over if an emergency vehicle wants to get past. If you do this you will be out of the way in plenty of time.
*I apply this in Wigan, but not Manchester, if you leave much room between your car and the one in front anywhere where there are two lanes some tool will push in front of you, they do it at KEEP CLEARS, yellow boxes and traffic lights as well but I leave them to it on those scores.
