But I can't be arsed to find it.

Anyway, I think they are on the best upcoming bands around at the moment, great to see the likes of Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine still alive in British music.

Are they likely to play this year?

You probably know as well as anyone else. They haven't self confirmed as far as I'm aware, they are certainly possible, I don't know if one of the smaller festivals has snapped them up as an exclusive, I could see bestival or Green Man doing it.

They are at Bestival, but I dunno if that really means they won't play Reading

They're headlining the second stage at Latitude this year (I can't wait to see them) so they might even be in for a shot at headlining NME (The Gossip did this last year, headlining both the NME stage at Reading and the 2nd stage at Latitude)

No way are they big enough, and I would say the gossip thing last year was more of a record label decision, they're on the same label as KOL and Glasvegas and if that didn't have something to do with them headlining the tent I would be surprised.

Who says how big they are going to get by July/August time ..?

I think by then they could most definitely have gained the notoriety to be in the top four of the NME stage. Besides, NME love them.

Why would they get bigger between now and August? If anything their peak was at Christmas when they apeared in all the end of year lists and their adverts seemed to be everywhere. Their album and all it's singles were released a while ago, so I couldn't see them play higher than third from top NME stage or maybe headlining FR, although they are probably too big for that now.

And even if they do get any more popular between now and August it won't matter since NME headliners will be booked now. I definately seeing them playing somewhere in the NME tent though.

I know what your saying but I reckon that FR sometimes do actually book bands and sort their placing on their expected popularity. Take Florence for example. She got announced for either 3rd or 4th from top when the announcement was made last march even though I think she hadn't released a major single. Come when the fest arrived though the tent was packed for her and she was probaly placed so high on the back of the nme awards and that brit award. As someone said tho it won't happen for the XX but they will definitly be there I reckon, probably playing 3rd/4th the same as mgmt last time they played.

Also, Arcade Fire and MCR.
Pretty sure they wouldnt be headlining if they weren't anticipating a big increase in popularity.

The difference is those bands have new albums coming out, whereas The XX's was released ages ago and a new one probably won't be out till next year.

Really? Oh i didnt realise that. Im not really a huge fan.
Still, im pretty sure they consider how big they expect someone to be at the time of the festival. I guess its harder to determine though for a band who are just increasing in popularity without extra releases.

Indeed, you have to consider the effect of word of mouth and the touring they have been doing.

I think people are seriously underestimating how huge these guys have got, at the moment Last Fm puts them as the 59th most listened to band in the world. I know that doesn't sound much bust it puts them above Smashing Pumpkins, Iron Maiden, REM, Rage Against the Machine & Aerosmith at the moment. Could easily see them second headline NME under Interpol.

I think there must be a good chance they'll play the NME stage but I'd be very surprised if the headlined. They could perhaps headline the Festival republic.

I really enjoyed them last year.

Way too big to headline the FR, my guess is third from top NME.

Bigger than La Roux was last year? I doubt it. They could easily headline the FR if they were up against a similar act on the Main Stage or NME stage.

I agree. On the last tour weren't they playing Academy 2 sized venues? I seem to remember them being at the Cockpit. Hardly NME headliners.

the last.fm thing is hard to judge though, they have taken off recently in america, more so than here. I cant say they have got much bigger than the end of year lists were announced.
they are quite good, and album was pretty good, not great though, and they hardly put on a show last year, lots of standing around, straight-faced, try to hard to 'look cool'
