What is the highest position any special guests have played?
Who were they?
And...
Are they always on the lineup poster as special guests or added in after.
I'm just thinking about them crooked vultures. With them playing second at download, if they were to be announced for R&L would it be with special guest status? And the same with thirty seconds to mars(as they are second stage headliners at download, I think)?

Second stage bands are usually exempt from having to be special guests (prodigy last year for example). I think it's just bands playing the mainstage at both that need that status. I suspect there will be a special guest slot either directly below Arcade Fire, or 2 below them.

What do you reckon the chances of TCV actually headlining the Radio1/NME then? Slim?

It all depends weather or not they signed a 'exclusitvity contract' at download. if hey did they can only play download this year however if hey havent it wouldnt surprised me if they played, but then thats all to do with weather they want to etc.
Last year faith no more headliend te nme tent and download. they wernt 'special guests' and were simply put on the bill after download had finished. so you never really know with these things.
again 30 secons to mars (from above) are also fairgame, it depends on there contract and if they can/want to.

In 2001 Papa Roach were Special Guests and they played 3rd from top. They weren't announced until they'd played Ozzfest.

weren't kaiser chiefs billed as special guests last year? It's either to do with bands being contracted elsewhere and it being a conflict in interest for them to be advertised until said festival has taken place (affecting sales etc), or merely an ego stroking exercise such as ian brown (although in fairness to king monkey i'd have been pissed too playing below maximo park, their last album was dull!)
