If you have any questions about anything Texas related feel free to contact me, I hadnt checked this.
If your on twitter I am rideincircles.
For SXSW info check these sites.
http://do512.com/c/sx2010/events/all-music...010/03/12/?time has a custom schedule builder and links to rsvp parties.
http://www.austin360...usic/sxsw-music l
http://www.thepeenscene.com/ posts up to date flyers
http://weshotjr.com/sxsw/ has a map showing parties (not all)
Some parties worth going to:
Fader Fort http://apps.thefader.com/pages/create_rsvp...fader-fort-2010 RSVP quickly.
Carniville - Diplo Major Lazer Gza http://austincarniville.com/
Mess With Texas - Man Man Gwar Andrew WK http://mwtxparty.com/
As of now its 1800+ bands and over 600 unofficial parties. Its really hard to describe or plan your activities at SXSW and you cant always make it into certain shows without badges wristbands or getting there early.
No matter what happens you will walk up on something unexpected and you will be walking alot.

Some random facts and whatnot:
I paid for one show all weekend, all the others were free and had free beer or cheap beer.
100,000 people came from out of town. 13000 people had badges and wristbands.
2000 bands played, there over 700 free parties.
This year I drank too much, mediocre bands blurred together.
My favorite shows of SXSW: SLeigh Bells, The Very Best w Radioclit, Bone Thugs, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Cut Chemist, Surfer Blood, Delorean, We Are Scientists, Neon Indian & Local Natives.
In the midst of my blurry weekend, I did take 1000+ photos.
Most of my photos are here.

yup, 4th year for me
booked flight yesterday, hotel and badge sorted as well - can't fowking wait
should start announcing bands soon (reg closes this friday for bands)
lady gaga and crystal castles both have tour dates in texas the week of sxsw and have dates during sxsw free so as historically bands that have done this in the past, end up playing - e.g. muse / brmc last year. can see them both playing, guess gaga will be in stubbs if she does.

Officially there are 1900 bands booked, but there are usually tons more, kinda hard to pick a schedule sometimes.
After travelling to Glastonbury I can definitely say that south by southwest is a music festival worth travelling to. Less than a month away and I can't wait.
Here is one of the best sights for organizing a schedule.

Also the tickets are something like $600. Is that right or are those delegate tickets? Couldn't find where normal punter tickets are, if those are them then that seems pretty damn expensive. Also these after parties, do you have to be in the industry to get in?

Camden crawl / great escape - no way at all similar imo, they aren't even 0.1% as good as SXSW is, only comparision really is that they all involve just hiring out a load of venues and have bands play. SXSW is a completely different beast all together. It's pretty much like no other festival I can think of really, it basically involves closing down the whole of downtown austin (6th street) for the week and just having bands play anywhere that there's room for them to do so
In some ways it's more focused towards the industry - its rammed full of talent spotters / pa's, a&r people, journo's etc and theres talks in the convention center which are good if you work within the music industry (I work in the music industry but have zero interest in doing anything work related out there).
There's a insane amount of music on which is why anyone goes tbh. Official festival has about 1,500, with the unofficial stuff that goes on it's probably closer to 2,500 odd. There's mini festivals in themselves that go on at the same time unofficially.
Price wise - $600 is for the badge if you leave it last minute (it's cheaper if you book it in august, cant remember the price off the top of my head, it goes up every X weeks). You don't need to be in the industry as such (you have to register a company name when you sign up, but you can always just use your blog name or something tbh). You can get wristbands - but you have to be living in austin as far as I know (you can't get them online etc), it basically goes badge people > wristband people to get into venues priority wise. Some official shows (run from 7pm - 2am ) let paying customers in. You could do the whole week without a badge / wristband but it would mean just doing unofficial stuff (which tbh there's more than enough going on...)
Party wise - e.g. http://www.austin360...11-1193791.html there's normally about 400-500 + going on during the music week, the day stuff is free to all the public, likewise with the evening parties. Some stuff you have to rsvp to just so they can strike your name off a list, some stuff is invite only / comp only / limited rsvp only (e.g. spin magazine show), some stuff you have to pick up a free seperate wristband which gets you into X venue all week (e.g fader fort has about 150 or so bands playing over the week, likewise with purevolume).
A lot of bands do the unofficial stuff, but nothing official e.g kanye west is rumoured to be doing the saturday night in a warehouse, foo fighters tuesday evening somewhere, zola jesus is just doing a day party, likewise with tv on the radio doing a day thing for spin magazine.
If you want more info - just ask
Oh yeah, free drink and food in most places if you know where to go and at what times

I will include some random info from my experiences.
I went badgeless which means no wristband or badge, just lots of rsvp's to parties and some cash for shows.
I drank for free at some show everyday i was out at sxsw.
Out in downtown austin all day for 3.5 days in a row eating, drinking and seeing shows only cost me $120. good luck finding any music festival to see as many shows for less than that money. Did I mention I was drinking for free at half of the shows?
Best show of the festival - Trentemoller at La Zona rosa on Saturday night. Shit was insane, best electronic act I have seen.
I spent 2 afternoons at Fader Fort, Friday with Odd Future, Matt and Kim, Smith Westerns and Ellie goulding. They have free drinks all day wed-sat from 2-9pm with bands playing nonstop. Not my favorite line-up they have had but Matt and Kim was super fun.
I saw what may have been Screeching Weasel's last show. Ben Weasel took a few punches at some people that threw stuff at him, unfortunately they were women. Show ended immediately.
I saw Peter Murphy play an acoustic set for $10 in a small club.
Over 2000 bands played and supposedly 200,000 people were there (its spring break weekend also)
One of the local things to do is ride a bike around sxsw, since venues can be 20 blocks away I bring my bike with me to get around. Austin is a fun ass town without sxsw. My bike got stolen on the second day when I was on my friends porch and had it sitting by the stairs. I made it to the strokes show in time thanks to my bike though.
If I would have known my bike would get stolen in austin I still would have gone.
I have a few photo albums from my sxsw experience. Kind of like a documentary. Check them out if you like.

Bands I saw at sxsw:
The Strokes (stupid packed free show)
MAtt and Kim
Odd Future
Trentemoller with live band
Telegraph Canyon
Pharoah Monche
Screeching Weasel
The Smith Westerns
ellie Goulding
Peter Murphy
Moby dj set
Skrillex
Asobi seksu
Esben and the witch
Twin shadow
Foster the people
Toro Y moi
Beardyman
Shit Robot
I go every year because it's close, but I would travel to it if it was far away.
