i dont think so

and no, wouldnt have to headline, in fact, based on his performance at Cornbury in 2008 he could just about manage the croissant neuf stage - talk about phoned in - man he was bland.

I saw him in 2006, I thought he was great. I would go see him again, but he avoided Scotland on his next tour...

Still hoping and wishing I get the chance to see Simon & Garfunkel just once though, before they decide to give it up for good.

He's not played to my awareness, and I've been doing general Glasto reasearch.

(e.g. Random discovery - much to my surprise, Van Morrison's never headlined the main stage.)

No surprise there, he doesn't give a shit and jazzes up his all his tunes now. Cretin.

As for Paul Simon, I saw him a few years back, good show in parts, some of the Simon and Garfunkel tunes sounded great even on his own. He wouldn't headline though. Maybe we should ask Emily to get him on the Croissant Neuf stage as Tugger says. I'd go!

I've no problem with this.  If a guy has been playing the same songs for forty or fifty years, why shouldn't he reinterpret them?

He doesnt reinterpret them though, just plays them in a bog standard club way. Its not like Dylans version of Masters of War from last year, which is totally different.

Van's a risk.  On a good day he's awesome.  One a bad one he's dire.  But it's a risk I'd take.

there's re-interpreting, and then there's singing them as if you can't wait for the performance to end....

which is usually what you get from Van (in my experience)

Speaking of Van the Man, there was a live version of Cyprus Avenue knocking about on youtube a few years back and since taken down. After the first line of the song the crowd cheers very loudly, amazing performance. Its not the version from Its Too Late to Stop Now.

Any Van nerds out there know what it is? Big vague I know but its of an “officially released” quality methinks.

I had a bootleg called Van The Man from around that period. I think it was an american radio show. The only song I remember for now, was a great version of Just Like A Woman ... not sure if Cypress Avenue was on it...

:P

quite a good version here

Cheers Tonyo,

Reminds me, havent been on Wolfgangs Vault for a while. They've some cool acoustic Muddy Waters gigs up there recently. And some great Lightnin' Hopkins stuff.

Van the man, on the Astral Weeks tour last year, sounded sharp, his voice was excellent, and kept the songs similar to their original form (lots more repition of lyrics, as he does, though).

Think he's played a rather poor afternoon pyramid slot in the last decade?

thats not surprising tho, given his aversion to the combination of outside & the dark :P

my best mate has had 3 separate spells as his agent and he's (van) properly bonkers!! :P

Paul Simon would be great - a proper dream of mine to see him with or without Garfunkel.

but as much as love some of Van's recorded work, I never ever feel the need so see the man live, at best you get a faithful reproduction of the album from a man 40 years older (and not in better voice), at worst he comes on with a clock he ostentatiously puts in front of him on the stage and plays for the minimum time stipulated in his contract. The crazy fool. Oh sorry, I meant joyless c**t.
