yep, ok I know theres an older thread. but nevertheless.

we'd like to confirm that there will be a summer sundae fringe festival for 2010, and the parties will return once more. in fact, we're so taken by the idea, we've almost got in bed with the devil and come up with a mildly unofficial fringe festival showcase gig.

A Fringe Renaissance.........

Love them or hate them, the Leicester Mercury have been running a series of events to riase money for LOROS (remember, the hospice for the terminally ill we at the fringe know and love). LOROS need £100,000 to finish building their hospice extension, and so the mercury have taken on the challenge. More specifically Gemma Peplow from the Leicester Mercury is off to trek 120 miles across China for LOROS, and to do so she's arranging a variety of fundraising activities to help raise the £100k. So she said she wanted to organise a gig, had no idea how to do it, and could we help her.

We scratched our backsides, thought "well its for LOROS, she is very pretty, and well, things have been a bit droll recentlY", and so we said "erm, yeah why the hell not".

So we asked about and someone said we could have their upstairs room for free. Then we asked 3 previous bands and one special surprise guest if they fancied helping us and would they play for free, and they all said yes. We realised we really should do it on a Sat night, sometime near pay day, we'd need some proper comedy comperes and that really we wanted a return to form so we want people climbing through the windows to get in, so its purposefully in a rather small venue. It's also on the first floor so it'll be challenging to window climbers. We're hopefully getting some lovely local celebrities to dj, and Matts installing some new disco lights so we can dance to the early hours.

So erm....we're having a party. We'd love you all to come. It's on April 24th, upstairs at the Firebug in Leicester. Theres only 100 tickets, and a door tax of around £5 - £6 (remember kids, its for charity). With the charity buckets we want to raise a £1000 for LOROS.

its about time we had some good news.

Line up to follow very shortly. Alongside a hoped for celebrity music auction also for ebay (if Gemma sorts it).

thanks it wasnt really something we'd planned to do, but it's hard to ever say no. LOROS are struggling to finish their hospice extension on time. and so it's just a little something to help them.

for anyone wondering who LOROS are, its a hospice for the terminally ill, they exist without NHS funding or support. a lot of our friends and relatives have benefitted from their care.

theres more info here :

The lovely people of Leicester will be able to read the following on their page 3 tomorrow :

Today the Leicester Mercury announces details of our first Summer Sundae Fringe Showcase gig, which will raise funds for our Loros Appeal.

The gig, presented by our entertainment guide The Week and local internet music forum Pineapster, will feature some of Leicestershire’s brightest up-and-coming talent, with performances from Leicester legend Frank Benbini with his bands Uncle Frank and Fatal Star, Autohype, Charlie and the Martyrs and one more special guest.

Organised by Summer Sundae Fringe Festival director Andy Black and Mercury reporter Gemma Peplow, the show will take place at Firebug, in Millstone Lane, on Saturday, April 24.

It will be a preview to the Summer Sundae Fringe Festival, which features local acts performing at several venues across the city the night before the main festival gets underway.

Andy, who also co-runs Pineapster, said: “We’re proud supporters of Loros and keen to help them whenever we can, so I couldn’t say no when Gemma asked us for help. And we never really need much of an excuse to have another party.

“This year marks the fifth birthday for the fringe festival so this is a really good way for us to showcase some of the finest acts we’ve put on in the last four years of Summer Sundae warm up parties.

“I’m really looking forward to it.”

All proceeds from the night will sponsor Gemma’s China trek in aid of the Mercury’s Loros appeal.

The appeal has so far raised just under £198,000 for the charity and Gemma, who will complete the 120km trek with her sister, Nicki, in May, is hoping to collect at least £5,300 to add to the total.

She said: “I write music interviews for The Week so I thought it would be a good idea to put on a gig to help the cause.

“We’ve got some really great bands playing so it’ll be a brilliant night and will hopefully raise lots of money for Loros.

“Thanks to all the bands and Firebug, as well as Andy for organising it all.”

Frank, from the hilarious Uncle Frank band and cult heart-throb act Fatal Star, is currently touring Europe with the rejuvenated Fun Lovin' Criminals.

His music partner Na'im Cortazzi said: “The Frank only comes out in Leicester on VERY special occassions...usually only for personal favours and charity...and charity starts at home. We are delighted to confirm that both Uncle Frank and Fatal Star will be holding court for Loros at the Firebug.”

Autohype singer Seb Twigden said: “We are more than happy to play the gig because Loros is a great organisation that cares for those that are very ill and close to the end of their lives.

“Hopefully we'll be able to raise a lot of money for the cause. We're very much looking forward to the gig.”

Charlie Jones, singer with Charlie & the Martyrs, said: “I've done gigs for Loros before and I'll be playing with some top notch musicians and friends.

“It’s always great when you know you're doing it for a good cause.

“Its a win-win situation really - people get out the house for a bit of quality music and a shandy and raise money at the same time.”

Pineapster and The Week Presents: A Summer Sundae Fringe Showcase 2010 takes place at Firebug on Saturday, April 24.

Entry is £5 on the door, with all proceeds going to Gemma’s sponsor fund for the Leicester Mercury Loros Appeal.

so, as a quick plug for this

April 24th Upstairs in Firebug

Pineapster and the Leicester Mercury present :

Summer Sundae Fringe Showcase

Uncle Frank / Fatal Star

Jersey Budd

Autohype

Charlie Jones

Compere : Damien St John from Leicester Sound

No advance tickets

£5 door charge

only 100 spaces in the room.

It's a taster showcase for our forthcoming gigs in August. The fringe festival turns the grand old age of 5, and so we're looking for the biggest set of parties / celebrations yet.

Frank needs no explanation, neither does Jersey. It's the last Leicester gig for Autohype in advance of their SSW appearance, and if you've never seen Charlie Jones, she'll melt you with her loveliness from 100 yards.

All the bands play for free.

ALL DOOR MONIES ARE DONATED TO LOROS.

help us make them a quick grand.
