I enjoyed them in '07, after a great performance by Bloc Party and before a now infamously weak performance by RHCP, but they've always struck me as a cult band, the sort of act that could get a good slot but don't really suit headlining. I would welcome them back though.
People have mentioned a "surprise headliner". Well what I'll say to that is, come on the R.E.M.!
Although Beaties would be a great choice.

charley, on Jan 6 2010, 11:02 AM, said:If there was any justice in the world, Primal Scream should be headlining anyway. You also mentioned Sonic Youth, the big difference being that Primal Scream did headline Reading a few years back at the peak of their popularity and what a show it was too.
Sonic Youth have never been big enough over here to justify headlining.
I appreciate you were probably just picking two bands that have been around a while rather than being specific, I think The Scream would put on an amazing show that would go down really well as a headliner, the only problem being that it probably would not sell the tickets in the first place.
I swear Sonic Youth headlined in the 90's? or at least played 2nd?

If a reformed Faith No More only headline the NME tent a reformed soundgarden aren't going to headline the main stage. no chance.

you can't take FNM out of context like that.
They were a download headliner and therefore could not headline Reading, they were a late booking and as such played the 2nd stage. Whereas at this moment Soundgarden (that we know) aren't playing any festivals, and therefore coudl headline whereever they go.

I'm quite confident that soundgarden won't headline. This is based on the interview with melvin a little while back where he said all headliners were booked during or before the last fest.
I would still love to see them somewhere on the bill.

Soundgarden are bookred at a festival, it says so on the Pearl Jam forum, says the festival will announced and tix on sale end of Jan.
What has been confirmed to be announced end of Jan? Download.
Looks like they're playing Download.

In hindsight, does anyone reckon Smashing Pumpkins or Pixies could have headlined NME? Considering the tiny crowds they pulled.

I would say the opposite in regard to Leeds, the crowd for The Pixies was tiny although the crowd wasn't huge for The Pumpkins either it certainly was larger.

But would the crowds for either band have absolutely destroyed the tent?
I personally don't think so, I reckon they'd have got similar sized crowds to the Manics in 2008.

VCK, on Jan 8 2010, 08:11 PM, said:it definately changed that year, i'll give you that. I remember wandering up to lost prophets just as they were finishing and the crowd just disappeared, it was gutting at the time as i was stupidly excited about nin/ pumpkins back to back, yet on the flipside i was down right at the front. Also my mate went to the pumpkins gig at the men arena, said it was half empty and they would've been more suited to the apollo, pumpkins still blow the bollocks off half the "rock" acts around today though!Pretty much. It was around the time when a Leeds fest ticket was becoming a fashion statement...
