I just found out today that The Flaming Lips will be playing a free show in Denton in March. That means I get to see them twice in a few months. Denton is about 45 minutes north of fort worth. Also, Muse plays in Fort Worth the Wednesday after the Flaming Lips show, then its SXSW for the next 3 days after that.
On a side note, SXSW is absolutely ridiculous, they have more bands playing than Glastonbury in about 5 days in every club, venue, grocery store, parking lot and any other nook and cranny in downtown Austin. Its hard to compare to festivals since its just based in city venues, but it gives you more options than are fathomable. Music is going on everywhere and free shows are the norm, tons have free booze also. If you want access to everything you need a $600 badge, if you live in Austin and want access to most stuff then you can buy a $150ish wristband. If you are like me, you can bum around a watch free shows all day and try to get into a badge/wristband only MSTRKRFT show while starting a riot that almost shuts down the show. Fun times.
I just realized today that I payed for my Flips New Years tickets on the 27th and havent received them in the mail yet. I noticed my seller had 2 negative feedback comments in the past month on ebay. He responded quickly that he willl look into it. He better not screw up my new years.

The Flaming Lips for New Years in Oklahoma City was off the charts. Dark Side of The Moon was awesome. I will be uploading a few videos over the next couple days.

I am a biiig flaming lips fan but they have let themselves down by covering darkside of the moon. Bit of a lazy, boring choice of album to cover and having acquired it over christmas I have to say it is not that great. Interesting, but not something that deserves repeated listenings.
If I had gone to that nye gig I would find it galling that they would play a covered album in its entirety but neglect to play 90% of their own back catalogue! I'd much rather see them play all of in a priest driven ambulance or transmission from the satellite heart or something.

i actually love the fact that they have covered one of the most popular and biggest selling albums of all time, i don't think it's lazy or boring, if anything it's brave to cover such an album that most see as something you just don't touch.
where would the fun be in a band as left field and relatively unknown to many people had just covered some obscure album by and obscure band?
and it's only to be expected of the band as they are well known for their covers and even covered bohemian rhapsody after all!
if you had gone to that NYE gig you would have had prior warning that they were playing dark side of the moon and would have only yourself to blame had you been disappointed.
personally as a lover of both pink floyd and the flips i would have killed to have gone to the NYE gig and seen their take on it.

have you heard it?
much of it is rushed and lazy. I hope it doesnt get a physical release and stays as an exclusive itunes download only.
At this point in their careers they dont need to be doing novelty stunts like this. Still, I suppose they have earned the right to do as they please. This sort of thing should have been a stardeath and white dwarfs project with help from the lips.
Such a disappointment after the sensational embryonic.

It was much better this tour anyway when the band emerged from a lady's foo-foo
Thanks for the reminder, I'd completely forgotten about their entrance.
No subtle imagery, just the psychedelic minge of the 50ft woman.
Quality!
Lips in '03 were excellent. Weren't they second top on the pyramid then?? Bright sunshine and grinning idiots are the clearest details I can remember.
What would anyone reckon to a midnight Park stage set? I think that could be awesome, but is highly unlikely due to curfew etc.

Christ, I'd love them at the Park but I think they're too big. After Bon Iver last year it would be out of this world, but no, I'm not going to get my hopes up

i've still not given it a listen but i was refering to their dcision to do it and not to the actual quality of the outcome to be fair, think i'll grab it this week sometime and give it a go.

I'll be interested to hear what you think.
Just to reiterate, I am far from a lips hater. They are my favourite band, I just think they are better than this.
As for 2003, yep, they were on the pyramid before radiohead. They brought along a couple of inflatable sunshines along with them but they werent needed as it was glorious sunshine anyway! It was a sensational set list:
Race For The Prize
Fight Test
The Gash
Yoshimi Part One
Lightning Strikes the Postman
One More Robot
She Don't Use Jelly
Do You Realize??
Waitin' For Superman
Breathe (this was actually a great cover!)
plleeeeaaaaaase let the lips play this year! The new album sounds wondrous live.

I thought their DSOTM cover was pretty good. It does seem rushed but it is very different, Great Gig in particular is worth a listen. It's no Dub side though.

They've just brought out their best album since Soft Bulletin and yet they play just 3 songs from it?? Apart from Magicians that is the same setlist they have been playing since time began! I just cant figure them out sometimes. Thank god the london gigs had a couple more from embryonic
The more I think about this, the more I think how perfect the lips would be at glastonbury this year.
