Rumour has it that Martin Simpson and Show of Hands are both pencilled in to play the last slot - ie headline, either acoustic or Avalon stage...

This from a source within the folk world who could/should/would know......but its tbc, and only a rumour.

edit - not a joint show, as that may read - a headline gig each - ie, Martin S on Friday, Show of Hands on Sat....or a variation.

Excellent news. Looks like my plan of spending the entire festival in the Field of Avalon is coming together....

As part of my plan to check out stuff I don't know or wouldn't ordinarily check out at Glasto this coming year I was planning on hitting Avalon etc. for some of the headline slots.  I've heard some Show of Hands stuff and quite liked it so may consider making one.  Besides, if I don't like it then it's only a short walk to Arcadia et al.

Show of Hands are one of the UK's finest folk acts. Pure class and certainly Acoustic headline material. They sold out the Royal Albert Hall six nights in a row a couple of years ago.

Show of Hands would be a great addition to Avalon. Saw them play there a couple of years ago and they got the crowd really rocking along and Miranda Sykes is very easy on the eye.

Very topical song regarding floods - about New Orleans, and written many years ago, so its prescient - and how shameful that New orleans ever flooded like it did, given what was known back in th 70's

And now we get flash floods all over the place......the world is changing..

Anyway - A classic song - and what a player - this guy seems to have 15 fingers....!!  Anyone who plays finger style guitar should watch this...but be warned - you might just stamp on your guitar afterwards.

Show of Hands are excellent live and would be a quality addition.  If they're up against Muse, then I shall be in the relevant tent singing along with Steve and Phil.  I hope they don't clash with U2.

They've just released a new album so it wouldn't surprise me to see them play.

I'd recommend their best of album 'Roots' to anyone interested in folk music, or anyone who is interested in decent guitar/violin/fiddle playing.  Phil Beer is an excellent musician, and Steve Knightley a very underrated songwriter.

Looking forward to hearing Cousin Jack in a tent at Glasto!

TSU - I noticed you contributed to the Tunng discussion over in wibble.  You seem to have a marvellous music taste.  If you like Show of Hands on record, you're in for a treat.  I think they sound much better live.  And they're very nice as well, I had a decent chat with both Steve and Phil after they played in Worcester a couple of years back.  Very down to earth.

Mine too.  They got me into them.  It's very, very rare for them to recommend something to me that isn't complete shite, so kudos to them for SoH.  Cracking band.

Another top track by them is called Country Life, which I really like.  Great to listen to with a pint of ale/cider:

Quote

Working in the rain cutting down wood
Didn't do my little brother much good
Lost two fingers ina chainsaw bite
All he does now is drink and fight
Sells a bit of grass hots up cars
Talks of travel never gets far
Loves his kids left his wife
An everyday story of country life

And the red brick cottage where I was born
Is the empty shell of a holiday home
Most of the year there's no-one there
The village is dead and they don't care
Now we live on the edge of town
Haven't been back since the pub closed down
One man's family pays the price
FOr another man's visio of country life

My old man is eighty four
His generation won the war
He left the farm forever when
They only kept on one in ten
Landed gentry county snobs
Where were you when they lost their jobs
No-one marched or subsidised
To save a country way of life

Silent fields empty lanes
Drifting smoke distant flames
Picture postcard hills on fire
Cattle burning in funeral pyres
Out to graze they look so sweet
We hate the blood we want the meat
Buy me a beer I'll take my knife
Cut you a slice of country life

If you want cheap food well here's the deal
Family farms are brought to heel
Hammer blows of size and scale
Foot and mouth the final nail
The coffin of our English dream
Lies out on the village green
While agri-barons CAP in hand
Strip this green and pleasant land
Of meadow, woodland, hedgerow, pond
What remains gets built upon

No trains, jobs
No shops, no pubs

What went wrong
Country life
It's a little bit of country life

Good idea re Best Of album - I've only heard a few tracks of theirs ever but I know what I like.

Jon Boden will hopefully make some sort of return too, whilst we're at it.

Yup - Roots is an excellent album with a very decent collection.  I can't think of many songs they've left off to be honest.  Except perhaps the amazing 'Dive' from the Witness album (their last one before the one they've just released).

If you're planning to give them a listen before Glastonbury, I'd also recommend 'As You Were' which is a live album from their 2004 tour.  It's a very decent example of how good they sound live.

As You Were - Live 2004

Roots - The Best Of

Who is Jon Boden by the way?

Jon Boden is the fiddle player in Bellowhead and with John Spiers in Spiers and Boden

Spiers is the accordian/melodeon/squeezebox player and the duo are known affectionately among the folk cognecenti  as "Squeezy and Scrapey"

and Bellowhead need to play Glastonbury, cos they're mental fun

Boden's solo album is excellent:

there's an interview I did with him about it here:

Ah yes - I've seen Bellowhead.  Tremendous fun. :P

I'll keep a look out for Spiers and Boden.
