Parts of that show were good. He was clearly in bad shape mentally at the time. Depressing.

I must have been at the bar when the good bits were on. My eldest, who was really looked forward to seeing a "legend" was really disappointed :P

Luckly that year we had seen "The Jamm" at Glastonbudget who were ace   :P

I absolutely adore the man- seen him 12 or 13 times now and the worst performance ever was on the Pyramid on 2007.  I was chatting to my mate the whole time instead of watching it.

He talks very fondly of the show he did in either 1993 or 1994, just after Wild Wood had come out, saying it was one of the best ones that he'd ever done (and 'they'd' done too, they as in the new band which was all finally coming together) and he's quoted as saying how strange it was when his personal life was falling apart, off stage his marriage to DC Lee had just broken up.

God no, please don't let this happen.  One of the biggest disappointments live, ever!  He is an awesome guitarist and I love his music but, he is as dull as dish water live.  Saw him on the Pyramid stage a couple of years back (2007 I think!) and I was bored shitless!

You and me both mate! At least he did "A Town Called Malice" at the end, but it wasn't worth the hour or so of tedium beforehand. Still, just an hour or so & 1 good song still puts him above this year's Springsteen yawnfest!

:P really Ms Chocolait?? I was there for his set at Pyramid 2007 and thought he was quite good.
(Mind you I also enjoyed Amy Winehouse similar time  :P )
I think Weller had the 2 blokes from Oceon Colour Scene on stage with him & all played a blinder.
Good mix of his solo hits & several Jam numbers too

I totally agree have loved his music since a was about 10 and was lucky enough to see the Jam in 1981 and they were amazing but in 2007 his gig was one of my biggest glasto let downs totally up his own arse all he played was his own album tracks hardly did any jam classics think the whole audience were bored shitless it was awful  :(
:P
I don't remember it that way. I was very mellow for his set 5pm ish and at the time knew every single song he played inc some Jam hits NOT just all solo stuff!  :P

That was the wrong show to see then.

He played Guilfest a few years ago (was it 2007? I can't remember) and it was superb, packed full of Jam numbers too (tho the few tracks he played of recent stuff was pretty dull). But I guess that was a little special for him as it was as close to a hometown show he gets to play.

Don't be put off by some of the comments on this thread. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and if Weller does Glasto next year, go see him & like you say "suppose i'll make my own review"
I'd be pretty certain he WILL do Glasto next year  :P

I recently read elsewhere that he has announced dates for June next year. I know there is always speculation when any act plays around the time of Glastonbury and doesn't always mean they will... Radiohead last year was an example.

I was gonna get my facts right & start a thread about Weller for Glastonbury next year, but saw this thread & had to jump on it... Offski for now...
(now where is he booked to play next June...)

I recently read elsewhere that he has announced dates for June next year.
Mon 3rd May 2010 Perth Concert Hall - Perth and Kinross
Fri 7th May 2010 Journal Tyne Theatre - Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Sat 8th May 2010 Grand Opera House - York
Tue 11th May 2010 New Theatre (Formerly Oxford Apollo Theatre) - Oxford
Fri 14th May 2010 Alexandra Theatre - Birmingham
Mon 31st May 2010 The Lowry - Manchester
Thu 3rd Jun 2010 The Venue - Derby
Mon 7th Jun 2010 Leas Cliff Hall - Kent

Prob bound to be extra dates added, but hardly a clash with Glastonbury then.
:P

Ok. Mostly his solo stuff & only a couple of Jam numbers.
I must have been a touch high / very mellow cos I really enjoyed that 2007 set.  :P

But then if I enjoyed it & most of the posters in this thread didn't... Must be cos I'm just a "Music fan" unlike the majority of the audience who are/were "festival goers" :P
(just picking up on the quote by Mr Weller in that NME article  :P )

:P
I take it you weren't involved in the Mod revival of 1979 then?
One of several musical highlights throughout my life and helps me 'get' why a man in his 50's still wants to be a mod....
You only have to watch Quadrephenia to understand the original Mod scene of the 60's was very much on a par with how the clubbing scene of The 90's was a phenomenal culture too.
I know that is a far fetched comparison, totally different scenes and music light years apart, but I'm just drawing comparison on the late nights, dancing, drug culture, fashion, designer labels etc etc.

...And I take it you never been on a scooter run either?? Man!
"..We are The Mods, we are The Mods, we are, we are, we are The Mods!.."
Brighton scene in Quadrephenia for full appreciation.  :P

For me, Paul Weller had, and always will have, a special place in my heart.  :P
..and his tag as 'The Modfather' is something I, and thousands of others very much 'get'

Correct. I enjoyed seeing The Jam though. The first time I saw them was at the Red Lion in Hammersmith. I'd gone to see Johnny Thunders Heartbreakers, who didn't show up, so there was this other, new band, The Jam. His support for the monarchy and the conservatives wasn't particularly endearing... I know he went on the Red Wedge tour supporting Labour, but by then he'd lost any credibility for me. I have no problem with people liking him... (good of me, eh.... :P )
But the whole mod revival was dated from the word go. Originally it was based on current French and Italian fashion... it was 'modern', and grew from the Beatnik movement from the late 50's/early 60's... it was current and relevant

I lived in Brighton when the fights between the mods and rockers were happening on the beach every Bank Holiday... it was stupid then.
The point to Quadrophenia is that it's what you, as an individual, are.

I totally see how exciting it must have been the first time round, but things move on...

Why is he The Modfather anyway?... he wasn't an original mod.

Valid points there Mr Blair.

TBH I don't know. Perhaps because of his obsession with the whole Mod thing. But as Paul Weller was born in 1958 he'd have some memories of the original Mod thing when he was a kid. In the same way I have memories of the Mod revival when The Jam burst onto the scene when I was a kid.
I suppose if anyone worthy of that title as an original mod it should be Steve Marriott.

Paul Weller's ultimate idol, I believe...

he'd outgrown being a mod by the late 60's  :P
