Is it worth staying in a hotel for the duration of the stay etc.

Personally, I recommend against it. Camping with the other festival (week) visitors is part of the charm of multi-day outdoor festivals, and the activities and parties go on all night.

That said, it is true that Sziget's location is quite unique and actually makes travelling from and back to the city effortless, so it's way easier to do so than with most other festivals. Ho(s)tels in Budapest should be cheaper than in North-Western Europe, but don't expect a free ride: it's still a big city.

How much cash do you think 2 people will need for the festival. We plan to arrive the 9th and leave the 16th do the full stretch.

We would be having eating out 3 times a day and buying our drinks as obviously you cant take anything in.

Also how easy is it to get hold of **ahem** chemicals, as im not too keen on taking them with me on the flight.

Obviously i am aware its as illegal there as it is here etc...

Food is not THAT cheap in the festival - from memory it is about £4-5 a meal. Pints are cheap at about £1.50 so depends how much you are planning to drink!!

Locals are not that keen on drugs and think the penalties can be quite stiff if caught - however think it would be relatively easy to get them around the dance tents.

Regarding where to stay - I personally need my home comforts - shower and comfy bed go a long way when out till the early hours every night.  Especially with the heat from camping.  The train from the festival runs all through the night then depending which area you stay in depends on how early/late the transport will run.  We found that by the time we were back in the city (about 4-5am the morning trams were already running close to where we were staying.  But as long as you are within a 10min walk of Margerits Bridge then it is easily doable as that is where the train drops off.

There's a HEV metro/train stop at walking distance from the festival entrance/exit. It runs to Bátthyányi Tér which is close to the city centre and two stops (and a transfer) from the main hub where all regular metro lines converge.

So I wouldn't worry too much about it, I'm sure you can fill in the details after some googling. :P

The closest hotel to the festival site is the Ramada Plaza Budapest, just by the Arpad Bridge.  Don't confuse it with the other Ramada hotels in the city though, because at least one of them is a good long walk from the city centre.

We've stayed in hotels and apartments for the duration of the festival, largely because I'm getting on a bit now and I appreciate a comfy bed and a hot shower!  It's not too difficult to find something that suits your budget, and getting around is pretty easy.  The areas we usually look for are Districts 7 and 9.

District 9 (Oktogon) is a very trendy area with lots of bars and restaurants, it's also very close to Andrassy Street and Heroes Square if you want to do the touristy thing, and a short hop away from the zoo and the Szecheyni spa.

If you opt for a city-centre base, you can buy a 7-day pass for the HEV which is pretty good value if you're using public transport to and from the festival site every day.  The metros in the city stop running around midnight and start again around 5am, so if you're planning some post-mainstage partying on the site, you will probably not get back into the city until the trams start running again!

There is also a dedicated cab service from the festival site, the City Taxi company has a fleet of cars that go into the city and have fixed prices for a lot of locations - we used them several times and even when we've been in the outer parts of the city it's only been about £4 each (four sharing) in a cab.  If there are more of you and you need a bigger cab, you will have to pay extra but they will tell you before you get in the cab how much it will cost so you can decide whether to take it, or split your group into fours to get normal cabs.  Simples!

According to Sziget News, GWAR have confirmed for this year after they pulled out of last year's festival.  Looking good, people!

What are you blinking like that for?  They're a great band to watch live, and well worth turning up early for!

More room for us then!  I was hoping they'd get a mainstage slot though, rather than the rock stage/shed because they're worth it.  Of course, you might not agree, but it would be a poor world if we all liked the same stuff, right?

Hi all,

I heard that you could purchase tickets in order to camp on the site the day before the festival starts (the 10th this year I believe) is this the case?  How much are the tickets to do this and where do I purchase these tickets?

Brilliant Line Up News!

I haven't got my my ticket or my flight yet! They aren't too cheap this year. I am thinking of flying from Bristol to Prague, has anyone ever flown into Prague and got the train to the festival?
