Hi,

Upcoming second EOTR attendee, first post here. Can't wait for it now. Going with my wife and 2 1/2 year old daughter. Been browsing the forum for last couple of months, mostly for band recommendations as I don't know some of the lower-profile bands, so thanks for that. Most looking forward to seeing Okkervil River, Neko Case, Fleet Foxes, Explosions In The Sky, David Thomas Broughton and Richmond Fontaine.

With regard to RF, friend of mine saw them at Electric Picnic near Dublin on Friday and said that the first half hour of their set was composed of tracks from their new album. Greatest hits ;) then after that. I only got their new album a few days ago so must give it a good hammering over the next few days. Anyway, thought this info might be useful for other RF devotees...

She also said Magnolia Electric Co. were, well, electric. Highly recommended apparently.

Cheers,

Rich.

Unlikely to see RF, unfortunately, as I really want to see the Hold Steady...... but definitely planning on catching Magnolia Electric Co ;)

Ignore Elfy who is taking the 'easy' option of party-closers THS over the raw beauty of RF's story-telling ;) (in actual fact I'm quite excited by the fact that the cross-over times means filling my heart with RF and then a tidy sprint over to the Garden for the last bit of THS when it's all 'going off'!).

Just getting you back for the friends thing, Elfy :D

The new RF record is terrific and easier to get into than gems like The Fitzgerald, so a good hammering should yield early rewards and pre-EOTR familiarity. I'm only sorry that I haven't had the chance to give EM Co. more of a go. I must say I wasn't 'taken' on first listen of Josephine and so drifted towards other bands that I wanted to hear more...too much music, too little time for homework!

Ben

I saw Richmond Fontaine yesterday. Absolutely amazing. I now have the problem of seeing them again or the Hold Steady.
And yes there was quite a lot of new stuff but also loads of older ones. Superb.

That's exactly my plan also Ben. Have seen both RF and THS in small venues in Dublin. THS are probably the more raucous of the 2 live, but I love RF in a way that I will never love THS. No offence guys :D

Have Songs:Ohia from Magnolia and like it a lot, so will be checking them out. Also Malcolm Middleton and Steve Earle cannot be missed.

Have struggled a bit checking out some of the lower profile bands, as haven't been willing to take a blind punt on unknown albums, but we don't have the free Spotify rolled out in Ireland yet so haven't been able to use that. Still, have done ok and I don't think I've got free time for any other newly discovered bands now anyway!

Rich.

Well in that case let me stick my nose in (again) and recommend some lower profiles that I didn't know pre-EOTR plans but have became likely/must-sees:

The Leisure Society (just heavenly songwriting)
Mumford & Sons (great folky-pop stuff - very feelgood)
The Tallest Man on Earth (acoustic guitar/banjo to die for)
Spokes (almost post-rock at times with a violin!)
Loney, Dear (very, very good pop music!)

There. Go see them with a 100% satisfaction guarantee or you ain't seen me, right?

Nice one Ben, the only act I know there is Tallest Man On Earth, so I'll be checking out the others, and you better pray they hold my attention ;)

Hell, Rich - I need some serious disclaimer in there somewhere. Actually, I'm pretty confident... ;)

Fading Trails is very good :)

Anyway, re RF - there's got to be at least one band at EOTR that I curse myself for missing ;) - might try and catch the beginning of their set (can't remember the timings....)

- last year there were three - The Young Republic, The Acorn, and Shearwater. At least I've had the chance to see two of them since - the same two I will be seeing again this year :D

Oh, and Bob Log III - but we'll hopefully catch him this year :)

Definitely agree with Leisure Society, Spokes and Loney, Dear. Don't know the others and don't want to cos they're bound to clash with something ;)

Can I add.....

Blitzen Trapper - an absolute must for me :)
She Keeps Bees - Ditto
Joe Gideon and the Shark
The Acorn
Shearwater
Dan Sartain

There, that should be enough to keep you out of trouble, Rich :D

Couple of things:

1.

Anyway, re RF - there's got to be at least one band at EOTR that I curse myself for missing ;) - might try and catch the beginning of their set (can't remember the timings....)

You will, when issued with my before-mentioned pastel-coloured clashfinder (extra copies already in rucksack pocket!)

and 2.

You and I prowl these boards FAR too often :D

I for one am happy with this prowling behaviour of yours. It has added another 10 bands or so to my list. Blitzen Trapper and Shearwater were already on my list Elfy, but t'others have now been added. I foresee lots of time for my wife and daugher in the kiddie drama and painting tent ;) . Once my wife catches Okkervil River, she'll be happy anyway........hopefully......!

Rich.

I prowl too ! However, as a novice / first-timer (for this festival) who hasn't even heard of many of the bands, I don't feel qualified to comment very often, but am taking note of opinions expressed and looking forward to hearing something (many things) new. The lovely Elfy has kindly provided me with some CDs to whet my appetite: I have been playing them in the car and will continue to do so on Thursday evening (breaking my journey in Gloucestershire) and Friday morning.

Missing Young Republic last year must count as an achievement in itself - they played at least 4 sets!
I see they are touring next month ......

Bob Log III once seen, never forgotten!

Actually, I should clarify - we missed them doing YR stuff....... we saw them doing covers in the Bimble Inn - but we didn't realise who they were til after they'd finished :D

It was only after EOTR last year that I started listening obsessively to 12 Tales from Winter City and it rapidly became one of my favourite albums :D

Joe Gideon and the Shark are now rivalling Mumford and Sons for my number one MUST see:

"Bought a bicycle in Clapham where I roamed the early hours
Picked up a Queen and he showed me his crown jewels
Made myself mysterious with a haircut and a hat
Worked 9 to 5 at Debenhams, rented a flat
I lasted until my lunch break and then I took off,
There wasn’t a moment to lose,
I’d already wasted the morning selling another man shoes"

Class!
