hmmmmm just back from the big chill and its pretty much a flag free zone.... i wonder if this is down to it not being televised?  ;)  the crowd infront of the main stage is pretty big so how come people there dont feel the need to bring a flag to 'help find they're friends or 'add to the atomosphere' eh? in my opinion it really all comes down to inconsiderate attention seeking twats wanting to get on tv and nothing else  :( it made such a pleasant change to actually see the bands on stage and a really nice crowd with not a w*nker in sight, no aggro, plenty of space for camping, great music, great atomosphere, beautiful scenery, scorching weather, friendly security and hardly a copper in sight  :(  this may be heresy but i think if there ever comes a time when im only going to do one festival a year its going to be the big chill.... unless of course the flag waving tossers abandon glasto and go to the big chill instead  :(

This would be so easy to police, just have a no flag policy within the front stage barrier & the next crush barrier. Problem solved

So lets not even bother having artists on a stage & just have huge screens 40 feet in the air, that should do the trick

That picture is amazing, i must admit flags do add to the atmosphere, but they cuase more problems than good.

I may be wrong but doesn't this reflect a slightly more mature audience?

Must be the TV then. It is only an issue at 2 stages after all at Glastonbury.

The way I see it is that you'll see so little of whoever's on stage from back there that the flags actually add to the view.
:(

As a photographer for efestivals, I generally walk around the arenas to get some good crowd shots & at the Pyramid, the best shots (unless you can get mixing desk tent) can only be had from right at the back of the arena, so I spend a fair bit walking along the track to get a good vantage point for this.

As for policing the flags within the very front area of the stage, like pissing in the ditches it doesn't need policing, just a mention of how anti social it is should be enough. The last 3 years there does seem to have been an explosion of the flags.

As for people needing flags to find eacj other what a load of rubbish, our party has never had the need for a flag & we have always managed to meet up, just arrange a meeting place between bands if you do get split up, it is fairly easy....

I don't get the point of your first paragraph. From the position of your shots you seem to go to a similar position to our group, ie back and right of the sound tower. We choose this position as it is less crowded, but maintains sound quality due to the raised position. I haven't expected to see much from here for years however. I also would have thought the flags would have livened up your crowd shots.

I think a gentle suggestion for flag wavers to move behind the crush barrier wouldn't be a bad thing on the face of it, but won't it just generate aggro in the crowd when someone doesn't take the hint, or thinks their pigeon doesn't qualify as a flag and doesn't take kindly to criticism from others?

As for finding your mates, I agree in as much as we've never taken a flag and have little problem meeting up, but then we are not the sort of group that spends all day in the middle of the crowd at the pyramid, which makes it a lot easier, and it sounds like you are similar. Some people do choose to do this, and are not necessarily wrong for wanting to. Our meeting point has been between the two bushes right of the tower for a long time, and we have similar fixed positions at most stages, at least until we are all there. Less organised or bigger groups might find a marker of some sort helpful.

I just want a tolerant festival that doesn't try to regulate things too much.

We used to have designated meeting points... perhaps we still do, and I haven't been paying attention.  These days, it's no big loss if I get split up from my mates... it's not the end of the world, and some of the best adventures I've had, and discoveries I've made, have been as a solo wanderer.

There was a time when we used to spend time in the middle of a crowd in front of a big stage.
We never needed a flag to find each other.  Not even when hammered.
You only need a little common sense.

Aaaah they don't bother me, the national flag ones I find interesting, the football flags bore me.. I'm usually too stoned off my face to care.

BUT

The guy who had a pigeon on a pole deserves a medal.. I was trying to hunt it down all weekend. any pictures of it anywhere?
