the major flaw with this post is that most rock fans consider foo fighters, chilis, pumpkins,RATM,pearl jam, muse, etc as heavy rock bands(or at least liked by fans of heavy rock).so if you added all these bands to linkin park, guns n roses, green day,the darkness and the two metallers, maiden and metallica you will find that is quite a large proportion of rock/heavy rock/metal headliners in the last 10 years.(also mote that a lot of the non rock bands you mentioned were from over 10 years ago which was before many of the posters on here went to the festival)

in all fairness Foo Fighters is fair enough with the rock. But Chilis i woul still class as Alt, there very early stuff is like feeble funk rock and their later is just poppy alternative rock. The Smashimng Pumpkins are straight Alt, they are so varied Gish is heavy roskish and Adore is somewhat shoegazey.  Rage you can get away with putting in metal, i stuck them in Alt due to the blending of genre (could have pout them in rap to some degree) and Pearl Jam i class with Nirvana (on a very loose thread) due to their involvement with the mainstream American indie scene, and the Grunge scene. Muse again can go anywhere.

i did say it was crudely donme in the original post, but i think the sentiment remains.

Well the genre is a bit specific. If one of the titles was: Bands that appeal to the metalers, then that'd be atleast one headliner a year.

I want a variety of bands which mean that all my mates will keep going every year, as it's rare to have them all in one place. Most years there are enough bands to match everyone's taste to make that happen, but even those that are more "indie" fans are not too happy with the lineup.

At the moment I am planning on watching Deftones, Faith No More, Eagles of Death Metal, Spinnerette, Rival Schools, AFI and Lostprophets. I will also probably end up watching bands I don't really know with my mates, otherwise I wouldn't see them all weekend.

In a way I kind of like the fact that there aren't that many bands I want to see, as I'm getting old and need to lie down a lot more than I used to!
