Way below, I reckon. Sub-£200 handhelds would do the job, one per turnstile. A £100 wireless router at each gate. Link them all up with fibre or wireless repeaters, whichever works out cheapest.

Getting the software right would be the biggest challenge.

It could be LESS of an invasion of privacy. Done right, all you'd have to provide would be a photo (as you alread do) and a name that doesn't even have to be your own.

Apologies for spamming the same link over and again, but: http://www.hartnup.n...-event-tickets/

I think the main invasion of privacy issue is with the organisers always knowing where you are (admittedly it would only narrow you down to being inside or outside the festival) and when you enter and leave the site. I don't see this as being a major issue but I suspect there would be some that would.

They DO run a successful festival (and have done for quite a while!) There is no need to change a system that works, if customers who are careless enough to lose their tickets are put off attending again then that is their loss. The system DID work for the original poster, they did get in (after some considerable hassle)
and anyone who loses their ticket SHOULD expect to have problems, just as you would if you lost your passport prior to flying. People need to take responsibilty for their own actions (or lack of) and not look to others for a solution when they caused the problem.

There is no denying that they do currently run a very successful festival but it is dangerous to rest on your laurels. There are no shortage of long running events, institutions and businesses that have failed to move with the times and have fallen from grace as a result. The festival industry in this country is huge and there are no shortage of festivals who would like to take Glastonbury's crown. This issue on it's own is obviously not a deal breaker for most people, but the problem spawns threads like this which create negative publicity for the festival; instead of going onto other festival forums and bragging about how great Glastonbury's ticket entry system is compared with the competition we are all on here bitching about the current disorganised system.

So in short, Glastonbury has a history of innovating and improving things for the benefit of it's customers, this is why it is successful. Refining the entry systems should be the next thing they look to do. If they don't and they fail to maintain their standards for innovation then their competitors will take up the mantel and seek to benefit from from the business model that has brought success to Glastonbury festival.

While I understand your frustration at having lost your ticket and still wishing to attend.....

As you point out, the T&Cs say you need your ticket to enter.

No one treated you like shit apart from yourself. You had lost the ticket that you need to have to enter. That is no one's fault but your own.

How much you've spent is an irrelevance. An equivalent of what you're saying is: You go to the bank and withdraw £1000; you lose that £1000; you go back to the bank and demand another £1000 cos you lost the first £1000; they laugh at you cos you're taking the piss and don't give you another £1000.

Would their laughter be unjustified? Or would it be what you'd rightly expect to happen due to you having lost that £1000 by your own fault?  .... There is only one right answer.

They do not have to implement any lost ticket system; it is not and never should be their responsibility for what you do totally outside of their control. Or do you still expect your mother to wipe your arse for you? :o

If they were to implement a lost ticket system, there would be massive expenses for them to do so. It would require a site-wide computer system (not easy to keep up and running due to the weather), custom-written software; extra staff; extra delays at the gates; and probably much more.

Why should the rest of us pick up these costs just because a tiny number of people can't take responsibility for their own doings?

I sympathise with you still wanting to go. But it's still all your own fault, and you expecting others to take responsibility for your own actions is about as pathetic as things can get.

Gosh, what an ugly post. Hardly in the Glasto everyone-mucking-in-together spirit, is it?

As it stands, he did take responsibility for his own actions - he got himself inside. He deserves congratulations not someone with the moral perspective of a grumpy traffic warden slapping him on the wrist.

For my tuppence worth, there seems to be some flexibility on the gate, but it appears inconsistant. Some without a ticket they've bought have been allowed in, while the OP wasn't. I would imagine that this grey area is down to ultimately a member of staff's gut feeling as to if they're being blagged or not.

In my line of work I regularly get people trying to blag stuff from me, and it is amazing how convincing some people can be, despite a completely unconvincing story ("I left my valium on the train because they were too heavy") whilst others are rubbish at it. I have laughed at excuses on occasion when they have been in my opinion lies, but I guess I may have got it wrong from time to time, and therefore come across similarly to the "rude" steward.

I don't know what the OP did to get the stewards back up, if anything, but others in similar situations were clearly believed.

I agree with Neil's position, if not his way of expressing it, but the reality appears to be that the rules are not rigid, and there is potential for exceeding the capacity even with this system, with the festivals approval and knowledge.

Issuing replacement tickets appears to be a grey area, and you getting one or not comes down to the steward's opinion.

i just feel strongly that ticket companies generally overcharge on ticket prices/booking fees e.t.c. I had tickets stolen once and it took ages to get replacements.

If its your picture on it, then i can see no reason for a new ticket to be waiting for you at the box office/guest list area. I doubt that anyone would be willing to risk sneaking in on a extra ticket this may generate, and certainly not enough to make it a valid excuse for not supply an extra ticket.

Well what it comes down to is that it either requires a way of making volunteers always do their job perfectly, or a computer system which has zero chance of ever failing.

Anyone got any good ideas? Because otherwise the system has to stay as it is.
