It's nice to hear from the other side of the flag debate. I'm not a flag person as such but I don't mind them because I'm not bothered about "seeing" bands (live music is about sound and atmosphere for me) and I'm actually just as happy to have a view of the stage which represents the audience - even if it does only tell me that some of them are Liverpool supporters or whatever. Also - I may not carry a flag to find my friends but I do sometimes use other people's!

The argumnent against them goes along the lines of it being selfish to spoil someone else's enjoyment. The Smurf's posts here show that it cuts both ways. They enjoyed making lots of friends by carrying a flag which drew attention. So doesn't banning flags spoil thier enjoyment? Even a football flag will have fellow supporters of that team or rivals stopping for a chat. People's flags were a starting point to many conversations around the site for us - right down to when we saw the chilli on a stick and told them they'd better be home early tonight because they were our landmark for our tent!

The Smurf's here totally innocently believe that they just added to the fun - and it becomes clear that for many people they did.

I actually think that one of the things that led me more to the pro flag side of the debate was the anti-flag movement's quite violent and total belief that they are right. Tunnel vision is very unattractive. Some of the anti-flag posts, not just in this thread but others, are so abusive it just sent me right the other way!

Hi amfy thanks for your post, I think you sum up perfectly why we dressed up and brought the flag: to have fun and to make people smile,   we all think that's what glasto's about, having fun with your group and others around you.

The talking point for us lot was the damn flags and how annoying some of them where but the main chatty point was about the outrageous, beautiful and funny costumes we saw people in this caused many a happy talk but the flags where just plain annoying only because some of them where that low people where getting hit on the head with them but pleased to say the person who i am talking about that spent his time walking around Glastonbury with a flag so damn low and hit half the crowd on the heads which he thought was funny eventually ended up getting his flag caught in a tree now that's funny serves him right

It's the 20 foot square football and country flags that inspire a general tightening of the clunge. Which I may or may not have.

The clunge flag was pretty high so It wasn't that annoying in my opinion. Other flags really annoying me because some were really low and blocked the view of the stage and then when i moved and could see again, the flag holder would start waving the flag to get on tv.
