Not being a country type of person, I have no general need for wellies.

This is my first proper festival and I have been keeping an eye on all of the weather threads and websites and can't decide if I should go out and spend money on a new pair tomorrow?

I have good quality walking boots with steel toe caps and are water resistant and think they will do for a light shower.

Thoughts an what I should do?

I personally prefer walking boots, far better for your feet than wellies, and, since they're laced up tightly, they're less likely to come off in the mud. Glasto soil is clay based, so very sticky mud.

If you buy some gaiters as well, this will add to their water-resistance.

walking boots are better than wellies unless the mud is over a foot deep which it wont be this year

They sound the ticket mate. I wouldn't get a new pair at such short notice as you may have trouble braking them in. I don't know how much walking you do with your steelies but it can be worth putting some padding at the bit your foot is near the start of the steelie sometimes it can chaff.

I take a good pair of boots, some trainers and a pair of close-toed sandals. Unbelievably it is when it is really muddy I wear my sandals, as I do spend alot of time in my tent, and as soon as I get in it's wash, dry and talc my feet, and then nice dry socks. :D

You can never have enough socks at a festival. You can use them on your feet, your hands, even as muffs. A few together you have a pillow, and they can be used to bulk to attract the ladies. You can use them to carry your beer or cheese. Got bored kids near by?? A few socks and you have a quick football. Or you could use your socks to tie the little shits up and gag them as well.

Socks. Buy them. Lots of them

Walking boots or wellies, that has divided festival goers for as long as there has been festivals :D

What ever you do, go to a sports shop this weekend and get some 'impact' insoles (normally for trainers), talc powder (small travel tube will do) and trainer socks (any cheap ones should do). each morning wipe down and talc your feet, put on the trainer socks first, then your normal socks (the trainer socks suffer the rubbing, not your feet), and along with the insoles, it will give your feet a fighting chance be it in wellies or boots.

I forgot to mention you can make sock puppets or boxing gloves with them. Hours of fun watching kids punch each other :)

Well the last time I didn't take wellies was 2005 and we all know what happened then! I will always take wellies now whatever the forecast, it's looking very unlikely to be a total mudbath this year so walking boots should be fine, the only problem I find is if you have to wear the same footwear day in day out it can be hard on your feet, alternating between wellies and boots seem to be better for me. I will be taking sandals, trainers, walking boots and wellies, I am hoping that the wellies will remain unworn!

I can feel it in my waters that you will not be needing the old rubber footware.....unless its for kinky purposes. Stout hearty boots for walking and a pair of sandals for chilling is all that will be required.

Socks it is then.  4 pair a day, 2 on the feet, one on the hands and one to give myself a fighting chance of someone to help keep justify bringing the double matress :D

Shopping list for tomorrow, insoles, talc and more trainer socks.  I can see the logic, but those boots are going to need fumigating on tuesday :D  Sandals for the tent area are already packed

Thanks for all the suggestions

I agree, just get a cheap pair of wellies.

Apart from good waterproof boots with gaiters these are the best things to have when there is sloshy mud. I know we are not going to get that this year but a sharp shower may well mean that they are worth having. Not worth the risk.

As soon as any mud starts to dry and gets tacky then its back on with the walking boots because, as others have said, wellies are no good in that sort of going. You will not regret having them though if we do get some wet mud, particularly in the busy areas.

In 15 years of festivals, I've never worn wellies. When it's muddy, walking boots or Docs are your friends.
